The mysterious glint of a new bride:

Sushma had just married into a malyalee family, though she was not their breed but growing in kerala has taught her all their habits and the way they handle things, so it was a very early morning in the kolkata sky with the howrah bridge in view and the usual warmth of morning making a note to become hot during the day, and the power cut, she was not used to so much heat, always loved the early morning bath because the water was cool then, a little later then it turns warm and no fun at all.

Thangam her mother in law had made the coffee by 5.30 and had kept it inside a hot water vessel and all tumblers lined up and closed with a lid, once she had washed her face she took a glass for her husband and one for self ran to their room to sit on a bench and watch the early mist over the river, which would melt away in no time, sipping into the coffee she could feel the vibrant feeling sitting next to him did to her. The slight smile on the corner of his lips spoke volumes with out any words, she married him because of his large eyes with long eye lashes like a lady, which would help him steal a look without the other know about it.

Never had she seen all these in her small town life in kerala, but when venky came for a holiday to his grandma’s place in thirthala, he saw her having her bath in the bharatha pozha which had only knee length of water and people made large pits to sit down and have bath, so if you enjoy a dip fully u need to wait for the rains to start lashing down, which is a great time to dip and bathe both times, it help to cool off the heat.

Slowly all that visual contact lead to a meaningful relation and both fled their town, to marry in kolkata at kalighat in front of maa kali.
When he went with the bride thangam was all fuming, but cannot help as venky came with her as wife.

After he came back from work that day he planned to take her to the new market, but thangam as usual to get a nod is too tough, but vythi her father in law never minded, knew the young lot always behave so, but thangam always cooked more rice and would insist eat the same in the night, which for sushma is a no no as she loves phulkas in the night and her hubby also loved it.

Both dressed up and moved out in a jiffy and the world was a bubble getting into the tram after walking over on the bridge, standing in the middle of the bridge the waves coming in during tide is a sight, it would raise to a very high level, and lashout the shores, and all the boats lined up would beep beep and beep. As the evening was setting in, they rushed into a running tram, and moved from esplanade a very short walk to the maidan and then to the new market, so many goodies. After they had nice eats from the road side, mutter luchi and aloo dum and some iced rose water, she walked over, venky always loved the pesarattu in front of the new market and by the time they had finished with and got into the empty tram it was nine in the night, and when they reached home, they both knew not a great reception it would be, but the enjoyment was worth it, they found their dinner of curd rice and morning sambhar near the toilet entrance and both furious went to sleep, to be tackled later..

What it is to escape from the scanning eyes of thangam grilling to find the story behind the glint in her eyes.. sunkan

    Hi Sunkan,

Nice post.. I feel it happens atleast in 70% of families, who stays with their in-laws.. we cant mistake any of them.. can say simply the generation gap or the in-laws want show up their role at home which causes differences..

generally every couple want to have their own time and spend it as they like.. but elder people at home mostly doesnt like going out and eating out..

i feel the elder people should not treat them as kids and ask them to follow their words..

    regards

This reminds me of an incident told by my co-sister.
My BIL will have food after coming home, eventhough he had already had his dinner outside the house, with my co-sister. She used to tell me that where in the world does he have that space in his stomach to eat when his mom gave her share and why he cannot refuse it?
This didn't happen to me because we never went outside to eat or have fun.:-(
Not only malayalee mils but mils of that state of mind is everywhere, can't help it:bang

    Hi sunkan,
good article. your articles always remind me of kolkata, and are so visual!!!I thank my stars that my inlaws are not like that. They are very outgoing and love to eat out and go out at the slightest provocation!!!

    priya,
i have spent a large amount of my active years there, doing shopping and running a home, with my father also in the railway bungalows which had a lot of breathing space not like the flat of my in laws where dust used to fall inside each time a car passed as we lived in the ground floor and i was always ready with a broom, it became my obsession, when with dad, i used to refuse to go to the south indian shop there, the only one for white dhothi and other stuff, for the srardham and all,

never used to get down from the car, but fate brought me right into the middle and i was sick all the time, until i quit kolkata for good, but it had its moments, near the garden reach a nice rotary club had a long wooden veranda onto the river and evenings there with sun set was a great site, and as it was a walkable distance i used to spend time standing there alone, most evenings, the flow of water and tide always inspired me about the time given to us, and how we should not waste it..sunkan
