"Aalaakku arisi, moolaakkup paanai, mudhaliyar varugira veeraappap paarum" Normally they use this proverb when people show off their false pride Half an ounce of rice, a quarter ounce pot. But look at the false pride of the mudhaliyar, "arai koththarisi anna dhaanam. Vidiya vidiya maela thaalam" They are people who boast about themselves for very little things they do for others and for those kindaa people they use this ......
Hey, I love this thread. You rock! One of my fav olden days quote... PERU PONNAMA KAZHUTHULA VAAZHAINAAR!!! Literally Meaning-Her name is Ponnama(Golden one) in her neck she wears plaintain fiber(used to tie flowers etc) as jewellery! What they mean to convey is - All show off and coffers are empty!
Hi saimom and shakambari....wow i really loved both..all three about boasting...i guess i would have to memorise all ,find it really useful :biglaugh..had never heard these before...thanks for sharing ok since you both have shared the boasting phrases, letme quote one from my side "AADA TERIYADA AATAKAARI KU MUTRAM KONALAAM"... i have changed the original word here to aatakari..original word would be a little harsh meaning is "the dancer who doesn't know to dance put the blame on the floor saying that its not in proper shape"...this is for people who blame others for their failure
whenever my husband cooks(which happens very rarely) i would say i dont want or i would eat less. But end up eating more than usual. He would say "Arachavanukku aatu kallu , suttavanukku dosai kallu" meaning he's left with nothing to eat.
If my mom is making some sound in kitchen by slipping some utensils by chance I used to say Enna Satham idhu.. "Vengala kadaila Yaana Poondha Mari" - Got this phrase from my mom ofcourse...:biglaugh You can imagine how noisy it would be if an elephant gets into such shop.... :rotfl
thats an old but a GOLD one... hey thats a good one...hehehehe this one my mom usually says when me and sister enter the kitchen to experiment something...or when we mess up some thing..hehehehe
ok...here goes one more When someone eats tummy full but still keep eating,we ll say "PAATHU PAATHU,VAAYA TORANDA KAAKA KOTTUM" meaning, you have eaten so much till your neck that if you open your mouth, crow will come and poke for food...hehehhe...i often say this to my husband...i also say one more ,donno whether its there in the old sayings or i framed on my own but my hubby loves this sentence...hehehehe "KONJAM SAAPATTU KOZHA KU REST KODU...VAYATUKUM TONDAIKUM KONJAM SPACE/GAP KODUKANUM"... DH,after having his lunch or dinner, would go and bring some snacks like muruku or some biscuits...for stopping this habit,i used to say, give some rest to the food pipe, let there be some space between the stomach and neck for sometime....
Also Panna Neram Illa Thinna Neram and Pannavanuku Panayum Chattiyum are also few which is in usage...
And If my Mom asks some help for bringing some things or so I used to ask another person again in turn.. She used to say.... Aatanukku oru thottanam.. Thottanukku oru thodapakattayam...
