    Sri sir,
thanks for the dosai special. indeed inthose days i too enjoyed odsas. especially i [as a team] will bunk collage [stella maris] and immediately walk to drive-in-woodlands and order for rava dosa - you must be surprised that i used to take thenga chutney like something. it was chutney main dish and dosa as side dish.
Modern varities i make in a jiffy is maida dosa and wheat flor dosa and ragi flour dosa. all come out well and i do not have to wait for long hours to grind to perfection. mixing of dals itself is a hard task.
even today when my sisters go out they make sure that they bring a parcel of rava dosa.
I am so touched that even with the advent of Mcdonalds, Kentacky's and other various pizzasas dosa cannot be removed from the scene. thanks i went down memory lane .

    Dear NK
Thanks for coming in to read an ancient thread of mine. Dosas are like Tennyson's Brook. Pizzas may come and pizzas may go but I'll go on forever!

Dosas at Drive-in used to be a great favourite of mine too and I have come across thousands of people who made the chutney the main dish and dosa the side dish. This is nothing unusual in Tamilnadu! Haven't we seen people consuming sambar by the buckets ( a familiar sight in Ratna Cafe)?

Incidentally, both my daughters graduated from Stella Maris in the late '80s

    Cheeniya ji,

:rotfl:clap very nice. Home made dosai stands above all.

After marriage i became a foodie like my DH. Your dosa story has made my mouth water. THough i make the batter every week, still eating dosa is not a boring thing at all. An all time favourite.

In Mumbai, there are lot of road side dosa vendors from Tamil Nadu covered by a large crowd. Each one ordering different items from the 'visual menu'. No computers but still they remember which customer ate what and bill it without fault. Their flawless memory is amazing!!

Though i had a late lunch today, you have raised my appetite & zwooomm... going to have some nice crispy 'home made' dosa & complete this eating ritual with a nice hot cup of 'Kapi'

    Dear Mira
Thanks a lot for visiting my dosa shop! Incidentally, I had a peek at your profile. Your favourite dishes cover 'Aviyal, Kalan, Olan, Puli-inji, morkootan, papadam, palada pradhaman, soups, keerai molagootal, mangai pachadi, vadapav, kulfi...mm...' but not the Dosa. Does your 'mm' in the end covers dosas and secondary items like it? There is a strong Kerala flavour in your preference leading me to believe that you must be a native of somewhere around Palakkad but that is no reason for not including 'dosas' among your favourites.

You are very right about the accounting skills and memory of the platform vendors of eatables. Amazing, isn't it?
    Sri

Cheeniya ji, i left it with mm.. because if i keep penning down, then it will be a never ending list (ellarum saapaatu raami-nu nenachupaangale!). Dosa adikadi seyyarome, so i don't miss it like i do the other dishes. your guessed it right. My parents are form Palakkad, so is the kerala favour in my favourites. In in-laws place, except, olan, kalan, pappadam, puli-inji, rest are very very rare in the kitchen. I miss them very much. Hence they stood first in the list. Nothing can beat Dosai - crispy hot dosai, spicy chutney & a hot cup of Kapi - An all time favourite!!

    Dear Ambika
What a wonderfully new word dosaholic is! Coming to think of it, the dosaholics will outnumber alcoholics by at least ten times! And there are no 'Dosaholics Anonymous' to treat them as 'Alcoholics Anonymous' to treat alcoholics. The only aspect where the alvoholics have greater advantage is the wide variety of beverages available for them to indulge. Dosaholics may have a wide choice too but the basic batter is the same!

Dosa with (getti) chutney is my favourite too. I like them from fresh batter but not from the vintage stuff!

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

Presentation is everything. Before all these developments inside Chennai city, once we venture out to eat dosa in VGP Golden Beach. My wife without knowing what she was venturing into ordered a family dosa. When it came, we were stunned by its length and it occupied the entire table and the bearer gave a direction that each person should start from their side and work their way in. I am being a very sensitive to the hygiene, I refused to eat dosa that ventures out of the plate.

When I visited Thiruchendur and Kanyakumari as a young child accompanying my parents (that was supposed to be our vacation trip), my happy time was when we were getting ready to have lunch or dinner. I always ordered dosa because the way they presented dosa was remarkable. It was cone shapped without getting out of the diameter of the plate. I still faithfully admire those dosas that came in color and dimensions that impressed me.

After we migrated to the US in 1995, we very rarely found Indian restaurants in our area leave alone dosa places. One day, we wanted to venture out for dinner and my son insisted on eating dosa. When we tried to tell him there was no dosa place, his intensity became stronger. In order to satisfy him, we went to International House of Pancakes and ordered 3 pancakes for him and told him that they were mini Uthappams. We also convinced him to pour the maple syrup on top of it and eat it and told him that they were new kind of dosas to be eaten with sweet syrup. He was suspicious but reluctantly started eating them.
