My main concern is the MOSQUITOES!!

I think we can deal with everything else in Chennai except for the mosquitoes... My 4 yr old is complaining about the 2 mosquito bites that she got when we went camping. I don't know how she will handle the mosquitoes in chennai!

Anyone have any ideas on how to keep them away.... I am allergic to the regular mosquito repellants and they never seemed to work anyway.

    Hi Meena,
My son was having the same problem! One of our family doctors suggested use of Calamine lotion, which proved to be very effective. If you use Lacto-calamine it is still better. This will reduce the effect of mosquito bite though it cant take it out fully. Apply twice, once in the afternoon and the next just before bed time.

    With luv.

Even though its a old post, I am going write down my opinion.
    1. Having lived here for more than 13yrs, so have lots of things to dispose.Main thing is the house, its very difficult to dispose in the bad economy. I am going to ship few furniture like bed room sets, living room furniture, dining set (not sure, if my dining hall will be big enough to fit my dining table in India :rotfl). All my kitchen utensils (I don't want to buy them again in India or start my life all over again)

    2. I think it would be bit challenging for my boys to adjust schooling and crowd. I am mentally preparing them for this challenge and ready to cope up with kids.

    3. I would prefer just my own family (kids, myself & DH). If DH's parents are willing to stay with us, I don't have any problem (but my in-laws will have to face problems from me, I am all set to take revenge now :hide:)
I will be getting the house which is near to kids school or at least near to one person's job.

    4. I would prefer to take care of in-laws expenses and medical expenses. We just want to do our duties.

    5. I am not sure of relatives at this point, all I think is only my DH's sister, now I know how to tackle her.
More than anything, I don't think we will have enough time to think about others here, when we ourselves have so much to do during initial years of returning.

My main concern is the living cost and my job flexibility. I should be able to spend time with kids and their education. At the same time, I don't want to be financial dependent on my husband and stay home.
Everyday my husband and myself day we crib about pollution, traffic, living cost, corruption etc, but still our heart is wanting to come back to India for good.

All the above issues might look very small right now because we just want to come back.

But we have option of returning back to US as well, if we can't adjust there. I don't want to just regret in life that I didn't make a effort to come back.

We just took our first but non-reversible step towards moving to India. Hence R2I has become a frightening reality for me this past week. I do worry about kids adjustments, in-laws, etc. But those are not really in my control and I think I will just go with the flow (or roll with the punches is more like it) and deal with it day by day.

The primary concern on my mind right now is the cost of living. When I think about our life in the next 3-5 years, buying a house is probably a main milestone. I just want to settle down soon. However with the real estate prices in big cities, I think that buying even a pale imitation of my dream house is tough. It is less about buying power and more about the wisdom/risk in tying up majority of our savings in a single house. Atleast that is what my husband is saying and I am doing my best to convince him about my dream house :)
Second concern is the quality of life -- working hours, travel time to get from one place to another, time spent with social obligations, headaches due to office politics, etc. I wonder if we would have the peace and quiet and the leisurely life style as we have here.

US is no bed of roses, and India is no sweet dream place either.
There are pros/cons to Abroad vs India. Good luck with your R2I priya.

Thanks Spiderman! Yes, india has its pros as well, hence our decision to move :) I just listed my concerns since that seems to be focus of this thread.

By the way, this is off topic, but on my mind for a while -- I love the line "Time enbathu “SURYA” padam madhiri, odikitey irukum..Aana vaazhkai enbadhu “Vijay ” padam mathiri, atha nama thaan otanum…". It always brings a smile. Kudos to CanWait and to you (for using it).

I haven't really thought much about the demerits of returning to India.

Perhaps getting used to living in India again ..( no offence it is the change I am taking about )
