I consume about a cup of cooked white rice everyday. Have tried brown rice too, about 3/4 cup of cooked rice.
I cook for my husband mom-in-law and my little girl. It's so hard to stay off rice for me.

Have you taken measures to cut/reduce rice in your diet ? How far have you been successful. Have you replaced rice ?

With Indian diets we know where the culprits are - Rice, Oil, Spicy or salty or sugary foods.

    Hi Meen,

I have tried the moong/masoor dal dosa and chana dal (not besan) dhokla. Both work fine.

Look at the log gi food grains.

As far as rice goes, try making kanji with 1:8 proportion. You can get away with 1/4 cup rice for 2 meals.

    Try low carb options

    1. Mission Low Carb Tortillas - available at walmart/target. Only 8 grams of net carbs, 9 gms protein per serving.

    2. Eat more protein and less carbs to cut out the cravings.

    3. Get 15 minutes of walking done after each meal - helps control cravings before the next meal.

You could try eating cooked quinoa (fix just like rice) which is much higher in protein than rice. Also add more protein to your diet but be sure if you are vegetarian to eat several sources in the same meal in order to balance the protein (otherwise you will not absorb it. Example: a cooked grain, dal, some dairy in same meal.

    Dear Meena,

I don't personally think that rice is a culprit in Indian diet, on the contrary it is a really great wholesome food. The trick is in moderation.

As a south indian, I cannot live without rice, and I have lost considerable weight without having to cut down much of rice. My breakfast is regularly idli/dosa. the trick here is to take lots of sambar with it + fresh veggies like carrots, cucumber. Likewise, lunch is regularly roti + rice with sambar, rasam, curd with veggies.

I am not a nutritionist or dietician dear, but in my personal experience rice is not really the reason for weight gain, it is usually the overconsumption of any food product. Moderation is the key.

    Have a great day.

    vidya,

i am a south indian and you should know as akila says rice is not the culprit well not exactly.

i have lost 14kgs..in the last 8 months, and that too with a balanced diet and a very very moderate exercise that is just walking...

the trick is to fill your plate wtih lots of veggies along with your rice..tricking your brain to feel that your plate is full..

i mix-match the carbos...somedays i just have sambar oats, curd oats instead of rice.. sometimes it is wheat rava--that replaces rice..

only thumbrule for me is not mixing two carbs in a single meal..like 2 rotis and a little curd rice..

only the glycemic index of the carbs are different otherwise all of them tend to give you the same calories...

Very cool Shanti. Yes you are correct. Rice is not the culprit, the quantity is. Even if we halve our rice consumption, we will see a difference.
