I have no proof to back it up. No notarized documents to substantiate my claim. I can’t even quote the source as an eavesdropped private conversation where folks tend to whisper such dark secrets. Nothing dramatic of that sort really. It is simply a hunch, a gut feeling that I have.

About 30 years ago, in a fairly large city in southern India, a male child must have been switched at birth. Don’t ask me who committed this dastardly act because I don’t know. But I know that the switch happened as surely as I know that a plate of deep fried onion fritters is the best reason to think favorably of a dark rainy day.

Before you write me off as a lunatic, let me explain the logic behind my supposition. The alleged ‘switched baby’ happens to be a cousin from my mother’s side. He is a misfit in our family and I say it in the nicest way possible. Here are some of the reasons why.

    1. If he is Einstein, we are the Brady bunch.

    2. If he is Marie Curie, we are the nosy neighbors of Mary Poppins.

    3. While we restrict our reading list strictly to milk cartons and horoscopes, he has written and published a book on Computer programming. I am sure that the word ’embedded’ plays a crucial role in his book but I doubt that he was talking about quilting.

    4. While the rest of us were wasting away our childhoods with pillow fights and the like, he spent many joyful hours staring at the World Atlas, committing to memory the landscape of the world.

    5. While we consider it a victory to just be able to recite our own names without getting our tongues twisted into a knot, he can not only recite the Vedas and the Upanishads but can take on even the wisest of men in an engaging religious discussion.

    6. While we don’t attempt any addition or subtraction over 2 digits without a calculator, he can make a TI-85 hang its head in shame.

    7. While we have all happily settled in to a rut that we call life, he quit his successful job recently to open up his own software business to pursue a dream of pioneering in the technology field, to “go where no man has ever been”.

    8. Mathematics does to him what a bowl of cold Banana fudge sundae does to us on a hot tropical night.

    9. Philosophy is to him as popcorn and a movie are to us.

    10. Generosity, kindness and humility are next only to Physics, Math and technology on his list of accomplishments while we are all still scrambling to put together something that resembles a list.

Now, I have only one thing to say to the culprit who switched him to our cradle - 'We owe you big time man!' :cheers

    Dear Meena,

    HAHA.Too good, really, just hilarious.

Well i am a misfit in the family.

!) i am a male, and yet i love to gossip, tell me a secret and within minutes the whole of india knows it.:rotfl

    2) Our family is fond of fish, so am i.But i like Hilsa fish, which the Bengalis eat, in sindhis it is called " Pala ". Same fish with two names. It has many thorns, none in my house eats it, just me.So i am a switched Bengali i feel.

    3) none of my other three brothers smoke, but i do

    4) none of them look at other women, the way i do, they look on them as sisters or mothers, for me every pretty woman is a Deepika Padukone(it is another matter, that she is younger than my daughter )

    5) No one in my family, or from teh last 70 generations ever thought of writing, as i do.

    6) None of my brothers love nonveg SMS jokes, the way i do, and love forwarding them to friends and bloggers (males bloggers only).:biglaugh

Well i can go on and on, so i proudly proclaim to be a misfit.

    Regards

    kamal

    Dear Meena,

Wow! Only you can be the writer of such humourous posts.:biglaugh:biglaugh

Well. My anna (cousin) is the misfit in my family in the way that he remains always silent with extreme patience. He meditates daily. The only person he talks good is the great "me". You see I am a great chatter box. He is an antonym to me.

I have 42 cousins from my mother side (including "onnu vitta":))
and around 30 of them stay in the same street. We are close to each other and all of us have "vengala thondai" except my anna. All of us gather together during pongal and a visit to our "kula dheivam" in May month.
There will be such a joyful "noise":) And this one never joins us.

He is a wonder to all of us.

    I enjoyed your post:cheers

    Dear Meena
Just becoz he is a bit different from you all so he became a switched baby??????................hahaha
OMG not really in my family atleast, wow you got a genius amidst you.:)
Thinking over it deeply I think I am the misfit in the family. Always bold and adventurous, ready for anything that comes my way....hehe
Elders in the house tell me leave this girl in the deserts she will dig water there too......hehehehe
I am not digging water at present here in the desert....:biglaugh:crazy
For naughtiness and pulling legs record breaker in the family(I have a very hugh family), even the elders are not spared. When some work has to be get done by the elders other push me in front you know to tackle them well others go behind the doors and hide....This happens even today sometimes with me.:bonk
    Oh it is never ending..

hey what an entertaining thread... about misfits in my family I don't know any.. all age groups are quite similar... we all enjoy eating drinking and gossiping!!!.. I think its when someone gets married their spouse maybe finds it a bit difficult to adjust to the crazy ways of the family but eventually we manage to engulf them!!!

    Hi Meena,

I'm speechless with admiration for your excellent writing skills!
Well, guess I am a misfit too, as I tend to cling to tradition in this world where change is the name of the game!
That will explain this remarkably short and appreciative comment...

    More power to your pen/keyboard...

    Love,
    Padma
