Whenever mediocre things are glorified for extraneous reasons other than their pure merit I am reminded of 'Deepasthambam Mahaacharyam'. The story behind this phrase goes like this.

Once a king in Kerala found that his palace gate is not properly lighted. So, he asked his minister to erect a lamp post. Accordingly, the minister brought a stone pillar and erected it at the gate and placed an oil lamp on top of it. Now, the poets in those days lived by the mercy of the kings. Their existence depended on the gifts doled out by the kings. Similarly, poets of that country met the king next day with poems praising him for the lamp post. One poet said, ' Oh, King! you have not only lighted the palace gate, you have lighted the whole world'. Another poet siad, 'the lamp emits not only light, but also it spreads your fame'. Like this many poets came and praised the king, got gifts and went back happily. There was among them a very learned poet who on hearing about the lamp post and the poems got curious and came to see the king. When he saw the lamp post which had no big architecture or design, he was surprised. Meanwhile, his turn before the king came and he said ' O, king!
deepasthambam mahaacharyam, enikum kittanum panam' meaning 'the lamp post is a great wonder since I also need money'.

Many a times in BARC I was knowing that my bosses were scientifically or technically wrong. But, I had to keep my mouth shut thinking of 'Deepasthambam mahaacharyam' since I needed to survive to support my family. Have you faced such situations?

    Regards,

    TDU

    TDU,

I do not agree for the SAKE OF IT.

I always find a way express myself.

And my boss appreciates it, I have been reporting to the Director of the Company for the past four years.

All you need is the courage and proper words to express yourself.

    Dear mithili,

What you have said is very true. This story I narrated is being used by many to get over the agony of having to tolerate mediocrity.
