    Cleaning our Backsides and Toilets

Yesterday on TV I was very saddened to see the story of a 13 year old Girl, who could not pay her fees, so was forced by the School authourities to clean the toilets, and she was taunted by her classmates, due to which she committed suicide.

The School Principal, she showed no remorse on TV, saying that her mother was employed , or told to , God knows, to clean the toilets, and maybe she told the daughter to do it on her behalf ! And there was not a trace of grief on her face, maybe she does not have a heart, but a stone instead.

In this case, the principal should be dismissed immediately. And the students who mocked this girl, should be made to clean the toilets, even if they belong to rich families.
And I would put CTV Cameras all around the school, so that these mockings would be there on camera, shown to the parents of the kids who mocked the poor girl, and then the punishment of cleaning the toilets be given to the offenders.

This would serve a lesson to the kids in future not to make fun of someone, which drives some kids to end their lives.

But for this I blame the parents. They feel cleaning toilets is the work of the Sweepress, or Bhangi, or Harijan or whatever we call them. And that it is shameful to clean our own toilets.

I ask u all one thing, and very seriously at that. Don’t we clean our own Bums every morning ? What can be more distasteful than that ? But do we crib about it throughout the day, or dread going to the loo, just bcs we have to clean up our backsides ?

I don’t think even the richest of the richest has a servant to clean his backside, is there ? Then why the shame to clean the toilet. How much effort it takes to clean the toilet, I want to know .

We have the brush, with which we just put in the Bowl, and on the water, and u have a clean sprinkling toilet. After bath, we take the mop and swipe the water off the bath area floor. And have a small cloth to wipe the taps dry, so that water does not remain and leave traces on the expensive Marc or Jaguar taps and fittings ! All this I swear dear friends I do it everyday in my own bathroom, and it takes hardly 3 minutes or 5 minutes at the most, that is all.

That is what I like about Americans and Westerners. They are taught to worship work, I never see the parents stopping their kids from working at petrol punps, or in Mcdonalds, or in sweeping the floor of the showroom they work in, all of them clean their own toilets, cars and what not. This is called dignity of labour, and I wish we stupid middle class, and rich Indians , the sooner we learn it the better for us. And the sooner we teach our kids the value of all this.

My wife, harsha , she wants the sweepress, who is playing truant, and now does not want to do the work, she works in many houses, harsha begged her recently to come back, when I tell her, I don’t need the lady, we can do without her.

These sweepress, has no sense of the value of our bathroom and our fittings, they screw up by using Vim, and a plastic scrubber which they use on the porcelain, fine, but they use it on the taps, taking off the coating of them, not realizing how expensive it is.

My Tuffy and Bingo, they **** in my lawns, now I pay the sweepress to pick that up, I pay her extra too picking it up from the road close to my home for the neighbours object.

Now no toilets have been made for dogs, so they will do it in the streets, so sometimes they oblige this neigbour , or the other one, and we have small fights over it off and on.I tell them tell the sweepress I have paid her to pick itup.

But when she dosnt come, I tell them I will pick it up, andi do so in front of them, and put it in a small bucket I have kept near the door , the neighbours are surprised, I say to them, tell me and I will pick up my dog’s **** and other stray’s too, where is the shame in it.

When I can swipe and clean my ass, this is chickenfeed for me. And I am not ashamed of it.

Wish more people teach their kids, that there is nothing wrong, in either cleaning their backsides, which they do anyway, or in cleaning their own bathrooms, or picking up **** from the road close to yr home.

And as it is, these sweepress, and others have now government jobs where they earn so well, even they are ashamed to do this, and very soon this problem will get very acute, the sooner we and ourkids learn, the better for all of us.

And who knows, many more innocent students lives will be saved, if the kids know the value and love of labour. I blame the parents more than the kids, for they are the miiror image of their parents, who teach them that this work is not fit for u kids !!!!

    Amen

    Dear Kamalji,

A very thought ful post from you. I felt sad reading that incident.
I agree with you Kamalji, its the responsiblity of the parents to teach values to their children. All of us should learn to worship the work whatever we do.

And Kamalji:bowdown :bowdown :bowdown to you. for you preach what you follow. I am sure atleast some of your neighbouts would have learnt from you that there is no work meant to be shameful act.

I too never hesitated to clean out bathrooms and toilets because I was brought up like that. Even in my in-laws home it is like that.

I dont know why some people create 'scenes' for cleaning their own toilet.

    Dear Kamalji,

I rushed to read this post after seeing the title. I wondered what you are up to this time and how naughty will you get?!

But I was surprised to read a very serious post from you. It touched my heart.

You will soon be hearing from other ILites too who live abroad like me. We have been cleaning our bathrooms and toilets since ages now. In most countries, you do not have any 'bhai' who will come to clean your toilets everyday. One does not even give it a second thought anymore. Almost everyday I clean three toilets in the house!

What I was really impressed about was to realize how well you know about keeping the bathrooms and toilets clean! You did surprise me. The way you have explained about sweeping off the wetness and using a brush to scurb the pot and mentioning a small cloth to polish off the taps etc convinced me that Kamalji is a neat man also. We already know that you respect women, are frank, philanthropic and now we know you are a gentleman!

We should not forget that 'cleanliness in next to godliness'! So where is the shame in cleaning every nook and corner of one's own home?

Once again, loved all the jokes, especially the one about the left and right brain!!

    L, Kamla

    Dear dear Kamalji,
Like Kamla said, seeing the title of the post,I too thought that it might be a naughty post from you and I even told SLN "I think Kamalji has posted a naughty post ".I vntured to open the post and sat glued to it,till I finished reading it.
You are absolutely right,we Indians, most of us feel that it is below our dignity to clean our own toilets.Parents ought to train their kids how to use the toilets, how to clean their toilets and how to maintain them also.A very useful post, kamalji.
This principal ought to be kicked out and the students who made fun of ther gil should be made to clean the school toilets for a week.
    Amen
    love

    Dear Kamla,

Now i dont care if another comment dosnt comein.Your visit is enough.I thought this blog stinks, so no one is coming to post their comments, but u proved me wrong.Thank u from the bottom of my heart.

Well i am naughty at times, but being a ladies site, i am careful too about what i post, for i dont want to drive away the lovely sisters that i have here.

You are right, when the NRI's and the foreigners can clean their own toiltes and pick up their dog's poo , why cant we indians ? if it is not shameful for them, why is it for us.What are we teachjing our children here ? Tht this work is good, and this is below yr dignity ?

I had a manager workign with me.One day tea dropped acciodently on my table, as i got up to search for a piece of cloth, the manager came and cleaned it, i was so apolegtic , i told him dont do it, he said, in my house i dotn have a servant, and i treat this as my own, i was very touched Kamala, for this small act i had so much respect for him.

Well uit hardly takes time Kamala to clean teh toilets, and in my house, we are just two of us now, with 3 toilets, so i use it just once, Harsha uses the other one, so 5 mins and it is clean till the next morning.what do i need the sweepress for ?

You know my office boys are ashamed to throw out the dirt, and all that from the office everymorning. So i pick up the sack from the first floor, put it in the Car dicky and down thelane is the dustbin of the govt and i go and empty it there, and bring the sack back, what is there to be ashamed of .If the boys wont do it, so be it, i will do it.

But these boys, when they want an advance, i refuse to help them and go out of my way, for they dont deserve it.Simple and straight.

Thanks a ton for the kind words dear .Im couched.

    Regards

    kamal

Well said, what is there to be ashamed of, God has given us two hands and two legs, and a brain, and we better use it and not be too dependent on the errant servants and maids.

    Thanks a ton.

    Dear Kamalji,

I felt sad reading the story of the girl, yes we Indians need to learn a lot in terms of discipline. I being an NRI learnt a lot on self help and dignity of labour after seeing the lifestyle of westerners. I wish Parents and school authorities of India wake up on this matter and teach the kids the dignity of labour, pride in leading a simple life.

Here in US, children are taught the value of self help and dignity of labour from their young age, my neighbour who is old American lady once told me that their grand children come and clean her house once in a week and get their pocket money from her. I got really fascinated by their idea of teaching the children about dignity of labour and thats how they become self dependant by teenage and work on their own to earn money for their college fees. I might be deviating the subject, but cleaning toilets or helping moms to clean the house , all comes from teaching and encouraging about the dignity of labour.

    Sujatha.

    Great post once again Kamalji.

You have touched a subject that is very dear to my heart. Bullying in educational institutions and the almost inhuman behavior of those that are in a position to wield considerable amount of influence on young minds are subjects that always leave me disturbed, more so because as a child, I had to go through both in school. Such moral irresponsibility as shown by the teacher in question is simply horrifying. My heart bleeds for that child who was mocked and humiliated enough that she thought she had no choice but to end her young life. No punishment is harsh enough for those that put her in this position.

Thank you for bringing this news to this forum. If nothing, it will get many IL members to say a prayer for this little girl. I will be back later to write about the rest of your post.

    Very good thread Kamalji.

I do think we make too much of a fuss about cleaning our bathrooms. Takes less than 10 minutes a week and one less person to depend upon.
However thanks to the reservations, we are trying to right some wrongs.

Janitors are not exactly welcomed with open arms in the west either. However, there is no requirement that a persons child has to follow the parents path. A professional can have a child that ends up sweeping for a living and vice versa. We need to move to that system in India also.
