Not because Kamikatsu is an eatable or a book or film or television show nor even a person.
It is a small town in Japan where ' Zero Waste is practiced '
Here there are no waste collections from households at all. People have to take full responsibility for everything they throw away.
Kitchen waste has to be composted. Non-food waste is processed either in local shops which accept goods for recycling or in Kamikatsu's Zero Waste Centre. There, people have to sort their unwanted items into 34 different boxes for recycling.
Residents have to sort plastic bottles (used for fruit juice, for example) from PET (polyethylene teraphthalate) bottles (used for mineral water) because PET is more valuable when it is separated out.
There are specific boxes for pens, razors and the sort of Styrofoam trays on which meat is often purchased. These have to be washed and dried.
The scheme was adopted when councillors realised it was much cheaper than incineration - even if the incinerator was used to generate power.
40% of people weren't happy about all aspects of the scheme.
The Mayor Kasamatsu Kasuichi is undeterred: "We should consider what is right and what is wrong, and I believe it is wrong to send a truck to collect the waste and burn it.
"That is bad for the environment. So whether I get support or not, I believe I should persuade people to support my policy."
Now he invites other politicians around the world to follow suit.

That's awesome!!!!! I just google for pics. and was amazed. Seperate containers for everything and it all looks so neat. Couldn't help but think if only all places had some facility like that, the world sure will be a much better place.
Thanks you so much for sharing htis info.

    Regards,

Thanks Gopalan Sir for bringing us this bit of news. It sounds too good but I couldn’t help recollecting the resistance by our society in Bangalore when all they had to do was to segregate their rubbish into food waste and others in two separate plastic covers. That is the normal reaction to any change. Sigh!

Rightly said. It is not enough if only some of us worry about this. It is not enough if the Govt takes action but they must have stringent punishments for law breakers. I remember that a few years ago Chennai Corporation brought out a law against spitting on the road. it was strictly adhered may be for two r three days. If places like Singapore and Japan could doit why not we?

I read this entry just now. Cleanliness should start from home. More than the government the people should cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings clean. Imagining our city to be like Kamikatsu is a greedy wish I know. I have seen people who keep their homes clean throw garbage in a careless way. This is evident from the garbage strewn around the bins. Awful. There are many people who spit as they walk on the road. One cannot walk on the main road near parked buses for the fear of someone spitting from the window. As a first step let us minimise the use of non biodegradable plastics. We are so much used to the convenience of plastics that it cannot be stopped all of a sudden. It is a welcome change that the government has decided to minimise the use of plastics in shops. Most of the shops charge for carry bags so we take our own shopping bags. Who can forget our good old `manjal pai`(yellow cloth bags). Though it is being replaced with jute and other bags, the all purpose manjal pai is so convenient. It can be folded and kept inside your hand bag. Can be washed often, Never fades, Eco friendly .When we were kids we used to make fun of people carrying such bags. I hope we realise our follies soon and make the world livable. If this trend continues think of the world for our future generation.

That's quite appreciable. If each and country follows the same, all the cities will be so clean & tidy. But I can't imagine the resistence we are going to get if our indian government tries to implement these. The opposition politicians will definitely get a nice point to throw the country into chaos with their bandhs, harthals, and all the voilence they opt........

The streets of chennai are becoming an eye sore these days. There is a lot of garbage strewn around the place where once dustbins were placed. The Neel metal fanalca has taken away the bins and corporation of chennai is turning a blind eye to the garbage. I heard a new agency has got the contract for cleaning garbage. I hope atleast they do a neat job.

    thank you for the info..

one co-IL has said that the govt had to take action.. ya... that's true... no doubt in that...if the govt takes stringent action, then there is definitely no other go for the citizens...

but one simple example... in my area, there are ample dustbins provided by the govt.. but the people don't throw the waste properly into the dustbin... you know how shabby it is..:hide:

    its also the citizen's respo....

    do think abt it please...:)
