    About Inflation

There was Bharat Bandh on the 5th of July, by BJP regarding price rise. Then a few days later <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on">Bihar</st1:place> had another Bandh by another political party .All a question of being one up over the other party .

We all do know, that there are a few certainities of life, some of them being Death, Taxes, and Inflation. Then why crib over it, is what I don’t understand at all.

I am comfortable today, by god’s grace, but there was a time, when I was having a torrid financial time .i have blogged about it in the past, so some parts may seem repetitive to those who may have read those blogs.

My fiat car, the tyres were all flat, and Dad told me to get the tyres changed for my own safety. But then a tyre tube in the mid eighties costed 600, so that would have meant an expense of 2500/- which I could ill afford. So I kept putting it off, saying Dad I don’t travel outside Jaipur, and if there is a puncture here, I get it repared in 10 bucks !

I used to drink Aristocrat Whiskey for 90/- , which slowly I found expensive, so shifted to a cheaper one called Sunny, which was for 50/-, but two pegs later, I felt my throat burning, I guess it was pure spirit, which comes cheap. And thoughts began to come in my mind, that Fiat is expensive, let me sell it, and get a Luna mopet, which I would park in the side street, and walk up to my showrrom,.so the other neighbours are not wise to it.

Sweaters were getting tighter, and every year I was prostponing buying a few, saying to myself, winter is just about 3 months, we will see next year.In short, I was shrinking my standard of living, as my showroom was not not doing enough to even sustain the salaries of two of my salesmen, and to bring the basic money to Harsha for her simple household needs.

That was when , one Day, God came in the form of my Dad, who used to visit us in Jaipur a few times a year. One day he made me sit, and explained me a few things , that I will never forget, a lesson from one uneducated man to another. Here is what he told me

“ Kamal, suppose there are two lines, one a expense line, and one an income line. The expense line is always going up, over which u hve no control.Petrol, electricity, food, everything will keep increasing. How much lower can one go in reducing his living standards ? Instead concentrate on the Earning line . Increase it so high, that the expense line dwarfs in comparison, and however much the prices increase, they don’t make a dent in yr living standards ! And secondly Kamal, Keep only those vices that u can afford, so if u want to drink Whiskey, drink Aristocrat, and nothing lower, and smoke ciggies , if u can afford it, otherwise leave both these things ,

Well I thought Dad has gone mad, old age is getting the better of him.But it did set me thinking, and it started to put me off my retail business, and I started to expore the export business, which I had done before, and very soon I was back in the export business, and with Dad’s encouragement and God’s Grace, I never looked back.

All thanks to my Dad, who pulled me into my senses, and gave me some words of good solid advise. He pulled me by the hair, and stopped me sinking the quicksand of poverty, by giving me advise, which changed the course of my life forever.

We have people working for my brother. One chap, we pay 3500/- I sent him two years back to learn car driving, to a driving school, got him a licence, I paid for all that from my pocket. I told him find someone, to make u practice on my Van, I will pay that instructor, and the petrol whatever it may cost. Till date he has shown no inclination to drive or learn. And he is the same fellow cribbing, to increase his salary. I have told him, the day he learns car driving well, he wont have to beg me for a price increase, he will be worth 6000 a month as a driver alone, and more also, bcs he knows all our Bank work, packing, and he is very honest. But since he does not show interest, he is the loser.

Most people just don’t want to work, or increase the Pentium of their brains, and still want a pay rise. In the olden times, a typist starting at 2000/- when she or he retired got her last salary of say 20,000/- doing the same routine job, but today times have changed, we must upgrade our selves, learn to work more hours to make more.

There aer lots of opportunities to make money, we must be willing to take risks, work hard, to make more money.

Coming to the poorer sections of society, u will see each and everyone using a mobile.which will cost a minimum of 250 a month of usage at least.what is the use of it, to a person cribbing about prices ? The faces I see in Mcdonald’s, well well ! Are Burgers a necessity in the diet.

Autos in cities like Jaipur, are a law unto themselves. Railway station is 3 kms from my house, and do u know what an auto costs? 60 Ruppees ? And now recently we have the call a Cab, AC Meru Cars, and a few others too have come up, and thy charge from my house to the Railway station, like 35 or 40, for 4 people, in the comforts of the AC.

How do u expect me to feel sympathy for this class of people ? Most want to live it up, without wanting to slog their ass out, or learning new things, but want more salary for the same work.

And those that crib, I tell them, cut off the useless things off from yr life, like celebrating lavish birthdays, cruises, party hopping, eating out too often and so on. But if u continue to do so, carry on, for it is your money after all, but then never ever crib in life, for then u come into the elite class , whose earning line is higher than the expenses line, so enjoy life, and grin.

There is much to smile about in life, its just that we have to take account of our balancesheet, and life will be fine.

    hi kamalji,

Yes...the increasing oil prices have increased the inflation rate in almost all the countries.

Most want to live it up, without wanting to slog their ass out, or learning new things, but want more salary for the same work.

very true ..how can we sympathize with them?

I can understand the cribbing of the poor but people like us crib only because of their never ending desires....learning to live within ones means is no more the done thing, looks like.

    Yesssss !:thumbsup

    Dear Kamalji,
Thats a real wonderful post from you.Your father seemed to have been an extrmely intelligent person and lt me tell from your writingyou also sound like your father with great grit and common sense.

In ourlife Kamalji,my DH planned everything. He had to celebrate
the marriages of all his five sistersgave them decent weddings, bought a house for his brother,we have two houses and reasonably
good saving and my DH was and is leading a blemishless life, official and personal as well.On my part, whatever he said or did was ok by me.I think God has been kind to us.Now our sons in law are doing well and we dn't have to worry about them.

Great writing, kamalji. Please do write a serious story, you can take tips from your father's advicesto you.
    love

Good message and great advice by your dad! But as you may be aware, only in India is the inflation higher. Although inflation is a part of life, STEEP inflation as we are seeing now due to the greed of some people can be curbed by the government.

    Dear Kamalji,

"Like father, like son"! Knowing about your father from your blogs that's all I can say. Your wisdom in daily life matters that matter the most is truly commendable and we know where you it get from - your Dad.

I cannot agree more with you that inflation is a reality that one must not only accept but plan for.

It is highly irritating to hear people crib about the prices of vegetables or aataa or daal when they are buying diamonds for birthdays and anniversaries or have a car and a full time driver parked outside their house just to go shopping because it is beneath them to be seen in an auto or a cab. And sure, there are many people like these. They crib about getting old but their expensive habits never get old!

Kamalji, what your father taught is was only worthwhile because you learnt it and imbibed it. Many times people get good suggestions but they fail to implement those. So the credit of your current super comfortable financial state goes a lot to your father but a lot more to you, for following his advice to the T.

We need more role models like you.

    Luv,
    SS

Your father sounds like a very wise man Kamalji. 'Live within your means' is such a simple motto if you think about it but many of us don't seem to get it easily.

I love your crisp analysis of important issues surrounding our everyday lives. Inflation is such a 'today' theme that everyone can relate to.

BTW, I loved your joke about printing a death notice. Totally hilarious.:)
