    Hi Friends,

I need help with the following issue. I had finished doing 8 weeks of lakshmi puja yesterday and then went to the temple. I gave haldi kumkum to 2 aunties in the temple. I wore a saree which has 3 colors in it - red, brown and black. One of the aunties told me that normally we do not wear black colors on Fridays and told me to remember it for the future. I was not aware of this. I had worn the same saree while performing the puja at home too. I told her that I did not know about this and what should be done and she said its okay since you did not know about it and also since your saree has more of the other colors it is okay.

But this has been constantly bothering me. Ladies what should I do now? Can you please share your thoughts/suggestions.

    Thanks

    Swaram

    Hi Swaram

In our Hindu culture, we normally wont used to wear in Black during any religious ceremonies, it may be Pooja or even wedding ( now, people started wearing BLACK for Wedding reception or parties )

There is always some meaning for our elders talk, nothing wrong in following them ( even blindly ) and its well and good if we get to know the exact matter / meaning behind that , sorry i dont know how to explain you, hope somebody else will do

    Hi there,
did you know Hindus are not supposed to cross the sea/ocean and go to other places? You are living in the USA and may be violating many such customs and traditions. Why bother with such frivolous things then? If you believe in God and has complete faith, nothing is going to harm you because you wore black dress or made some mistake unknowingly. Please try to shed such superstitions.

    Dear Swetha,
Dont generalise elders though there are more superstitious elders (like the one Varloo mentioned) it doesnt mean all are so....let us apply our reasoning n take a decision whether we want to listen/follow or not. You should read some of Chitvish articles so that we dont brush something as elders useless talk........First thing we should learn is to respect elders........if you dont like something they say findout the reasons n think you will find some hidden meaning... if not just dont follow........

    Varloo,
You have driven the nail correctly.......

    Varloo mam

I agree with you that Hindus not supposed to cross sea, but my elders used to say KAALA DESA VARTHAMANA , certain things we cannot follow certain things we can, i really really didnt mean that wearing BLACK brings bad luck or anything, but we have been told that BLACK is not for auspicious occasion, hope iam right

and, here, i mainly came to say WE SHOULD ALWAYS RESPECT OUR OLD CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS AND ELDERS TALKS.....may be we may not be able to follow them and some of the old3en days rules may be little odd, but i feel we are not supposed to criticise

    SWARAM

Doing pooja with BLACK DRESS absolutely nothing HARM in that, kandipa kadavulukum edhukum sambandhan illai, whatever dress you wear and method of pooja you follow, but it must be with utmost faith and beleif in GOD , thats most important

    Dear Latha,
I see that many people who are traditionaly, acharam etc. are following only those acharams which are convenient to them. We CANNOT do most of the things as our elders, this is not at all possible. And it is not criticising, we are edcated and we can analyse things and find out the reason behind such traditions.
On bhogi day, people burn anything and everything these days, creating lot of pollution. Did you know why burning is tradition? After the harvest, the remaining stalk of the paddy is burned out and then it will be tilled later. This ash becomes manure. That is the reason behind this. But what are we doing in the name of custom and tradition?
I cannot accept the fact that the bride's mother/father washing the feet of their son in law. Would you accept if it was the other way round? I have decided that my son's marriage will not have that tradition, if at all he has a traditional wedding.
Having bhakthi on God and doing pooja is different. Celebrate all the festivals with fervour, no problem. But encouraging such superstitions is not right. That is the reason for my replying.
One recent happening. One of my relative's daughter got married to a foreigner. After 6 months, they came to India and had a traditional marriage. It is really a laughable incident- the boy is not a Hindu/brahmin and he was not made into one. They are already married and would have been close physically too (in the 6 months). So what is the meaning of a traditional marriage? That girl is not a kanya when her father gave her away. isn't it? This is how we follow traditions.
