    Dear friends,

Pls clarify my doubts on carrying electronics to India. I've purchased a Sony Bravia tv for my family and would like to take it to chennai. Is there any duty payable in chennai airport for these things? If so how much would it come to? We may take 2 laptops, 2 cameras and a few smaller items....Should we have the invoice of these purchased items?

Friends....pls share your airport (to and from India)experiences...so that it would be useful for ladies who travel for the first time.
Also share your packing(luggage) tips which will help us all to have a hassel free journey.

    Cheers!:cheers
    Devi.

    Devi,

am really sorry i can't help u with 'how to carry electronics' coz i dont have any prior experience wotsoever..
but regarding first time experience i can tell u...well the first time i came to Dubai was during 2009 dec...my husband got me a tourist visa which was done by Emirates (airline) along with the ticket...and the visa was an 'e-visa' which means i dont have a physical copy (but i was carrying a printout of the scanned copy of the receipt of the visa)...so whn i came to the immigration counter (in Dubai)...i was waiting in a queue with atleast 30 ppl ahead of me and a security guy comes and asks everyone to keep their visas ready with their passports...but since i dont have a physical copy of the visa i shwed him the scanned copy which obviously he didnt understand ...so he just sent me to the eye scan dept (without even wanting to listen to wot i had to say) and whn i went there they told me that i dont have a visa so i have to pay a penalty and get it frm the immigration office...whn i went there they told me to pay the money at a bank counter nearby...and as my luck wud have it..the counter was closed for change of shift...i waited for half an hour and then whn the counter opened i paid the money and took the receipt to the immigration office whr they gave me a wierd looking printout of a window with my name written in one corner...anyways so i again queued up with 20 ppl ahead of me (and already 1 1/2 hrs gone by) and finally immigrated into Dubai....(really ugly experience) so my advice to ppl travelling by Emirates and also getting a e-visa thru them...pay 70 Dhs and take a print out of the e-visa even though they say it is not reqd. coz if u turn out to be unlucky like me where the security guy doent understand wot an e visa is u wud have to go thru the same ordeal that i went thru...

as regards India - i dint have any prob immigrating out of there... it was a cakewalk @ Bengaluru International Airport...

    hope this helps

    Hi jshree,

Thanks for sharing your experience. But it was exactly the opposite when I landed in Muscat (SEEB INTRNTL AIRPORT). I too had an e-ticket and xerox of visa paper with me and standing in the queue for the immigiration. When my turn came, the person just showed me another counter and asked me to go there. There was no queue in that counter and I went and gave the papers which I had. The officer in charge, just checked for the original visa which my hubby had already submitted there a day before and he stamped my passport and let me go and I just picked my luggages and went out.

Waiting to hear more frm all...........

    Devi.

    Hi Devi,

actually an 'e - visa' (electronic visa) is there only as a soft copy on the computer of the immigration officer at the desk when we r immigrating...the one that u r talking about is a physical visa coz ur husband had submitted it (@ the counter) right...this is visa on arrival (as far as i know)...this is wot hapnd to me the second time...i just had to goto the counter and collect it (DH had submitted at the airport prev day).... and then goto the immigration counter...
but since u asked about the first time experience...i dint mention about it

(and yes my kind of experience is not something that happens often...but somehow i'm very lucky so happens with me)

    HI Jshree,

Its good to know about the details of this kind....and what about packing tips ? Hope this is the timely discussion we are having... right ? Do you carry exact weight what is mentioned in the ticket...would they mind a few extra kgs....

Even....i was too lucky last time, when they asked me to remove my bangle which didnt come of my hand (I wore with so much of difficulty with soap) and my hub giving me a weird look....hheheheheee.

well i guess a few kilos (say 2 to 3) excess shudnt be a prob...bt take care not to exceed coz it is always dependant on the person who's at the counter checking u in...whn i came to Dubai i had an excess weight of 15 kgs (obviously) coz was carrying lot of kitchen stuff (utensils etc) and i had to pay Rs 650 for every extra kg which costed me more than Rs 9000... so if u think that even after paying for excess baggage the stuff that u r carrying is worthwile then do it else don't carry excess baggage...
and yes during security check i normally remove all my bangles, watch, rings and hair clips and put them inside a small pocket of my handbag...so that the metal detector doesnt go off...which itself will ensure that u dont have too much of frisking...(i have not removed my 'thali' ever and dont ever want to...dont mind extra frisking if reqd for that, just remember if u have any safety pins etc on the thali chain then do remove it, and the chain will surely not cause the detector to beep, i have done it in the US too and dint hav any prob but yes i have heard abot some places in middle east where it is compulsory to remove all jewellery...i'm not sure where)...later u can wear all the removed jewelery etc after ur security check...

regarding packing...normally i keep food stuff and clothes in separate bags/boxes/suitcase...ideally dont fold ur clothes a lot as for every fold there wud be some amount of trapped air and lesser folds the better...u can find that if u fold a dress just in half and keep it in ur bag/suitcase...u wud end up with enuf space than if u had it properly folded (say 8 times)...(this tip is only if u r carrying a lot of luggage and dont mind a few creases on ur dress, and not if it is for a short trip where u dont have the time to go and iron ur clothes again)...so i just stack all my dresses folded in half and then put my undergarments in the gaps that are there...

let me know if u have any specific packing need and i can help u on that too...
