    Hey ladies,

I am 21 weeks pregnant and recently read an article on how babies can already hear and respond to our voices! I know there a still of theories around this but wanted to know if anyone tried or is trying utero stimulation. Talking to the baby, singing and generally sharing thoughts etc! Kindly share your experience here.

    Deepa,
Yes, theories are ON. I personally didn't try but read a lot about it. Foetuses develop the ability to hear around the 5th month of pregnancy when they start to become aware of stimuli outside the womb. Many believe that in utero exposure to music (especially the classical variety) results in enhanced intellectual development.

I have heard it from the person who tried it! Can be true. Don't know to which extend!

Even I have heard of this.. I would talk to the baby, but I WOULD NOT sit in front of a loud streo and try and get the baby to listen to music.. apparently exposure to very loud sounds, for a long period of time, can also affect the baby's hearing (and give you a headache)..

I talk to the baby.. just random things.. my hubby also talks to the baby.. I have a friend whose husband has a habit of whistle'ing when he comes home.. when they had a baby.. and the DH came home from work.. one day the baby was crying alot.. and immediatly when he heard the whistle'ing, he stopped crying and tried to look around to see where the sound is coming from.. maybe becasue he remebered the familiar sound when he was in the womb.. amazing!!

I sang and talked to DS a lot when he was inside and even as a little baby the song I sang to him all the time (Kaatrinile varum geetham) would calm him down easily. I think it does help. Go for it!

Ya I have also heard a lot of instances where they say it works wonders.. Like for example, you keep singing a song to the baby when he/she is in the womb. After they are born, when they cry for unknown reasons, if you sing the same song, they would stop crying and get pacified!! So wonderful na?

Don't know if this is tangent to the topic, I have already started talking to my baby atleast 1 time a day.. I keep talking positive things like 'you are going to be a healthy, intelligent baby, mom dad love you a lot, etc etc..'
It is such a pleasure!! Nothing wrong in trying :thumbsup

rv8 - True, no harm in trying. I have also started talking to the baby, it was a bit weird at first but am getting used to it now:)

Vanathi- Thats great to know. I guess these theories do work sometimes.

    Vasumathy - thanks!

Devika- True , I have also heard similar stories and that made me wonder about whether they do respond to outside stimuli. My baby seems to like music- I exp a lot of movements when music plays, so I guess there's some kind of response!

    Priya- Thanks for the advice!

We have a story in Mahabharata wherein Prince Abhimanyu learnt the chakravyuh theory from Lord Krishna from within his mother's womb. It seems Lord Krishna just narrated how to enter the Chakravyuh but not how to break it and come out and so when Abhimanyu grew up, he could enter the Chakravyuh in the battle of Kurukshetra but could not come out of it. So assuming that utero stimulation works we should be very careful with what we expose the baby to.

My personal experience is this. A few days ago I experienced the baby's movements till around noon and then for the rest of the day there was absolutely no movement - not even a tap from inside. I was worried and so at around midnight I placed the earphones of my ipod on my belly and within minutes there was activity from inside. :)

I am yet to talk to the baby though. What do you people talk to the baby about? Do you have a fixed time to talk? What kind of songs do you sing?

Would be great if infants pick up good habits with these stimulations..whether it works or not..basically both of us are music lovers so atleast the heredity must make the LO a lover of music :)

i don't sing but listen to music a lot....hereafter will try to notice if any re-actions are there :thumbsup

    nayidulhan,

I guess we must complete the stories we set out to narrate!:)
Really nice to know that LO responds to music. Mine also moves to music but I am yet to locate a pattern to her movements. I have started talking- just random stuff and I find it difficult! so I look at her scan pics and start talking to her. I don't think she can hear me, never responded to my blabber :biglaugh. Of late I have decided to read , just simple kids stories. Not sure if any of this would help but what's the harm is giving it a shot!
