I am very fond of pickles while having food and sweets after food.
Since I had stayed in Andhra for 16 years I like spicy food very much. As everyone knows Andhra is famous for Aavakkai (Mango pickle). When we were young my grandmother used to make Paruppu podi and we used to have it with Aavakkai. It used to taste yummy. Now also my mouth is watering thinking of those days.
If we like something next minute my grandmother used to make and give us. Now I miss her very much.

Since we were going out of Bombay I cleaned the fridge and removed everything and put
off the fridge so when I came back there was no pickle. First day somehow I managed eating the food without pickle. Otherwise first thing after putting vegetable in the plate I serve myself with pickle. That will be there till the end. My husband always shouts dont have so much pickle. But I cant control myself. He does not like spicy food. So I prepare the food less spicy and to compensate that I have food with pickle. Then after food if any sweet is there I always have it.

of reading your thread i remember my mother's wording in Tamil (quotes or proverb)

::Amma uttatha shura manga uttum ::::: I may be wrong in writing in tamil..

I too used to eat more pickle but i love lime's elder sister NARTHANGHAI pickle ( don't know what is the english name).

We have this NARTHANGHAI tree backhome, but we are not allowed to bring pickles to UAE, so whenever i go to my mum's house, i eat more pickle and less rice,,, compensation know...

    mouth started watering ....................

    Regards
    Mrs.N

    Hi Viji
I love pickles too, though I am a maharashtrian..i was brought up in Hyderabad with plenty of access to pickles..especially avakayya (yum!) I don't know how to make them, but my mum and MIL make the most amazing pickles!
Now I'm reminded of my childhood days! :whistle hot steaming rice, ghee and amazing pickles with pappu!

Oh..you lived in Andhra, thts so nice to hear. Avakai is one of the most favourite recipe for all Andhrites. Did you ever ate Gongura pickle???This is one more favourite recipes. You have to taste it!!!
My whole family loves pickles, so I make sure that Avakai should be avaialble 365 days in my home.

    Count me Viji mam!

    Me too just like you.

I need Pickle for sambar rice and curd rice and would not mind hjaving it even with rasam rice or just the pickle itself!

I love all pickes and ther is nothing that i could point out as some thing tht i do not like in pickles!

They are such simple one time effort add ons to the food that make wonders in the taste! :)

    My best choices would be

Narthangai pickle, Lemon, Mango pickle, Mahali kezhangu and Maa Ingi pickle.

    Thanks for the thread MAM!:)
