    hi all

i am a veggie since i was in school.being a Muslim, practicing vegetarianism is a very difficult thing for me some times, specially when i go for a wedding or when i visit a relative's place.i cant expect vegetarian food in these cases.things become more difficult when u r t only veggie at home:hide:.my parents and siblings wont even have food without chicken or fish and mom had to prepare veg only for me.when i got married,my husband and in laws were shocked to hear that i am a veggie:crazy.there also they prefer non veg food only.so i started having small quantity of gravy with rice or chappathis.but even now i dont prefer non veg foods.my husband has very high cholesterol since 4 years and he is only 32 now.my papa has cholesterol, high b p,sugar,........they r all strong advocates of non veg.i am slim and i always do a lot of work at home.i have a lot of energy.i dont know scientifically the benefits of veg foods, but i feel light and energetic and my digestion is always great and i think i can have a lot of varieties in veg.if u know more benefits of veg and disadvantages of non veg,pls do share with me coz my family is trying really hard to convert me to a non veg:rant

    hi Shahbana,
First of all, hats of to you for practicing vegetarianism in such a difficult environment. I understand it must be very hard for you, with so many people trying to force you to eat non-veg.
Non-vegetarian food is usually rich in protein; unfortunately, at the same time, animal fat is the main source for evils like fat and cholesterol. Ideally it would be okay to have skinless, chicken breast or seafood; grilled and not fried. But, think about it. Does your family cook like this? Also, once you become a non-vegetarian, you will be taken for granted by your family that you will eat it daily. Also, meat is a source of many cancers including forms of cancers like that of the colon, breast, ovaries, and prostate. So, converting to a non-vegetarian is a bad option.
Vegetarian diet is naturally rich in fiber and low in saturated fat. And exactly, this is the reason you feel light and active. Vegetarian diets prevent heart diseases, lower blood pressure and prevent various diseases like diabetes, gallstones, kidney stones and osteoporosis. also, like you said, you have so much variety in vegetables , whihc will cover all your vitamin and mineral needs.
So, stick to vegetarianism. In fact, explain your family about why you want to and motivate them to reduce their meat intake.

    dear friend

I know it is very difficult for you to stick on the pure veg thing dear. My friend who was a muslim was also like the same and he really fought with his family to stick on his wish. some how from child hood he was against eating non veg, but later part of his life he worked really hard to stick on that.

I think if you are mentally strong, you can withstand anything. all the best to you for that.

Hi shahbana, you are doing well practicing a vegetarian way, I believe it has been very difficult for up uptil now, but your are doing well!

Some protien sources for vegetarians are :

    1. Lentils and pulses - remember reading in our old text books that a balanced diet has all so one should include vegetables, rotis and dal and pulses. Dals and pulses (like moong, chana, beans, etc) are sources of protien

    2. Nuts and seeds : So groundnuts, walnuts, etc are protienatious (but ofcourse you cannot just eat them like you eat vegetables)

    3. Milk and milk products : Do provide proiens too! (though not as much as the others)

Brocolli is one vegetable that is high in protien (as thats good in others too, its hight on vitamins and considered to be anti-carcenogenic)

vennelaaaa has pointed out the best parts why vegetarianism is better for health than non-veg.! So best of luck for convincing your family !!

    hi gayathri,
thanks a lot dear.i always try to include pulses, nuts and seeds, milk products etc in my daily diet.i haven't tried broccoli yet.i have seen it in super markets.but haven't tried it.one of the problems i face is,my husband doesn't like most of the vegetables and pulses.so if i try to balance my diet,i will have to make separate food for me and him.i find it difficult to make like that every day.so most of the times i compromise.i make vegetables which he likes.thanks a lot friends once again for your kind support

From my knowledge, human beings are not made to consume non-veg. To be more clear, our teeth and digestive system are designed to only facilitate veg diet.

And this is the reason people on high non-veg diet tend to develop health problems related to high cholesterol levels, bp, poor digestion n so on.

Non-veg foods are said to develop a lot of toxins in our body and mind too.
