Hi all IL’s ….. we are kind of in a strange situation and would like to know if anybody faced this kind of situation in there life and what will be ur openion…
My husband is software pgmer nd has lost his job and he is been trying since Feb 2010..but no luck ..he went to some personal interviews also but he didn’t got a job. Presently we r living on unemployee benefits. We live in the central US and our apartment lease was expired and we r going on month to month basis which is costing a lot (around $1000). My DH was thinking that instead of staying in this place and paying lot of money on Apt we can move to either CA,NY/NJ and try for job. He thinks in those places if he is local he will have better chances of getting a job or can get training etc. and apartment rents will be about the same. But this whole thing kind of feels strange like moving to diff state..with 2 small kids(4 nd 2yrs)…and is all this will be worthy ? when we moved before it was after he was landed in a job…I have never heard of anybody doing so…
    Here r our questions/concerns.
1.has anybody did or heard this kind of moving thing? 2. What is ur openion on this? 3. Which one is better for is jobs….CA or NY/NJ? 4. around how much per month we need to servive in those states?

Im not sure about the timing of moving, but I can speak about NJ.In NJ,a 1 bedroom apt in Edison is 1100 .I believe its the same or more in CA.While living in NJ,you can commute to NY.In Edison, some bachelors even live together and bear expenses.SO if it is tough for you...you can share with someone in similar position.(if possible, not sure if family present)NJ and CA are definitely better places to earn jobs.Good luck!

What is your status in USA? are you green card or citizen? If so I would recommend that you go for a government job in your area since you have the residency done. The pay is not as high but has all sorts of protections and benefits so it may balance out. If you are temp then it may be hard to meet the security clearance and other requirements. Do a google of the federal, state and county jobs for your area. Some have civil service exams and some are by application only. One warning: some jobs it takes years to even come open so don't get discouraged. The best thing is to get your foot in the door (take something that is open that will take you) and go from there.

Yes, those places have more jobs compared to central US. But moving is a costly affair and rents in CA and NY/NJ are very high compared to central US. Can your husband move alone and share an apartment with his friends till he finds a job and then move the family? That way you don't have to bare the moving expenditures in this situation. Also he will have the option to relocate to anywhere in US, which may not be the case if the whole family moves and signs a lease in the new state.

I think its reasonable thing to do, there is nothing strange or shocking about his idea.
u should move to CA or NJ and try harder.

aah seems like I am going to disagree with few of them here who say CA/NY/NJ is good to move!

Grass always appears greener on the other side. How about you guys pack all the stuff put the stuff in storage and you move to a motel where your monthly rent comes to some 800 or so. and you would have everything and you just have to get groceries..even better is look for shared accomodation or PG Accomodation. your rent would be cut down to half.

Remember he can also try to give some of his friends local address if the employers are asking for localites. There are ways to deal with this..but by planning to move, it is like another stressful thing and if he is not able to get job for another coupleof months after moving to the above places, the cost of living there is super high...atleast not like the way it is in Central US. so better stay put where you are, think of how to cut on expenses like moving to a cheaper apt or shared accomodation and save those employee benefits also which would help you last longer!

Also I am guessing you guys have GC (as you are getting employment benefits), then why not take up some part time or evening jobs till the time he gets a FT job, how about he getting trained on some new tool which is hot in the market.

Good luck to you guys and stay positive..this too shall pass..as you know it is part of parcel of living in this country..nothing is permanent except change!!

My laptops (both) were died and took some days to get a new one. I was not able to check ur replies.I think right now nothing is working in our life as we expect.

Anyways, my DH doesn't have any friends in NJ/CA/NY area to use there addresses. That's nit an option for us. Right now we r thinking to stay here only. Kind of afraid of moving without knowing where you will end up. We thought to move to single bedrrom apt in our city but legally if we have 2 kids we have to take 2bed apt it seems. And some aptmts r not offering to lease if you don't have a job.

Oneother option we r thinking is to me and kids can go to india until DH gets a job. If we r not here he can move to where ever he wants quite easily. But tickets cost is also high . I heard somebody saying that if u have one kid then only they will got to India until spouse gets job.is that true?

SriUS, there is no rule... it varies with situation.

You could have your kids stay with grandparents in India while you support your DH emotionally by being at his side.
