    Hi dieticians,

Namaste. I see a lot of dieticians offering good advise on various health related issues. Here goes my prob. My hubby has had a high level of Triglycerides for the past 8 years. For the past 4 yrs he has been suffering from hyperthyroidism b'cos of which his lipid profile was perfectly normal. Now, the hyperthyroidism is reverting to normalcy, his lipid profile is again taken for a toss.

The LDL : HDL ratio is much better with his cycling , although his Triglyceride level is still abnormal . Can the dieticians here advise me on how to work on this issue?

    His typical food pattern is:

    b'fast - cereal b'fast .

lunch - rice, with any form of protein [ dhal , lentil, paneer, egg or any non veg ], plenty of veg, curd

dinner - mostly idli , dosa, rava idli, rava dosa, chappathi, whole wheat bread.

Waiting y'r responses. Thx in advance.

The best way to control Triglycerides is to reduce fatty food and include physical exercise. You must ensure you atleast walk for 30 - 45 mts This will eventually bring down triglycerides. In addition, if you could include high fibre food such as Raagi, Jowar, Millets they will reduce your cholestrol as well as sugar levels.

What I meant by Jowar and Millets are Kambu and Kollu. You can include oats too. Until 2 months ago, I used to eat mixed cereal chappathi. Wheat, Kambu, Kollu, Raagi, Barley, Oats, and Corn too. It used to be very filling.

My husband has little high triglycerides too. Not too high but on the border. I changed my style of cooking and made more healthier meals. Here is what I did.

Include garlic in your diet. It is supposed to be good for cholestrol and my guess is it should help in trigs also.

Triglycerides are directly proportional to the amount of refined food we eat. Try replacing everything with wholegrain.

I am a health freak. I read each and every ingerdient before I buy anything. So make sure you avoid any refined flour/ white rice.
Less oil, less saturated fat will help.

I see that you eat rice, idli and dosa - all of which has white rice, meaning no fibre. Include a lot of fibre in the diet. It helps in keeping the blood sugar level under control which in turn helps reducing triglycerides. All these coupled with physical activity should help.

    All the best!

    Hi Aswini,

Thx , dear. Yeah, our rice intake is high , i sh'd say. Actually, half the amt of rice that i use for making dosa / idli is brown rice or hand pounded rice equivalent. So, let me try & avoid dosa / idli and replace with whole grain foods .

And, he is an addict of junk food. Will include garlic too.

    sabari,

firstly, accept my apologies for the delay in replying..i lost this thread and was able to trace it only now(went to the list of posts i had posted )

along with decreasing the amount of TGL ,you can also try to increase the level of HDL ,also know as the good cholestrol..the main culprit behind an abnormal lipid profile is SATURATED/HYDROGENATED FAT in our diet.

not all forms of fat are bad,in fact to maintain a healthy heart you need to supply good fat in the form of nuts and seeds..
i will just put the guidelines into points for easy reference

1.start the day by drinking atleast 2-3 glasses of warm water/garlic soaked in milk(i know it tastes yucky ,but then its too good for the heart)

2.include as much as raw vegetable/fruits in his diet.leafy veggies like lettuce, broccoli, spinach will do lot of good.

3.you must have heard a lot about FLAXSEED these days its making a revolution in diet management for a lot of ailments..you can try the flaxseed podi recipe given by chitra mami, try including it in your cerals, chappathi dough ,etc.it will help in increasing the HDL cholestrol.

4.OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS-if you eat fish,it will be taken care of by fishes like cod, salmon, tuna.if you are vegetarians, you get supplements available.

    5.FIBRE AND WHOLE GRAINS-INCLUDES LENTILS,PULSES,BEANS ,SPROUTS
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES..atleast 3 portions of whole grain a day is important.

6.WHEATGRASS JUICE-taken early in the morning is very good.
7.ALMONDS-proven to increase HDL nd reduce LDL..
    8.WATER-minimum 1.5 ltres/day
9.tryusing rice bran oil or olive oil ,go for sprays which will reduce the amount of oil used in cooking by a considerable amount.
    10.NO MARGARINE/HYDROGENATED FAT

last but not the least,EXERCISING is very vital for a healthy heart..threadmill/cross trainers are very good for improving the circulation.

11.if he is prescribed some medicines ,please stick on to it.

other than these points, you have plenty of info available over the net, sometimes it confuses us rather than helping ..so please prepare a diet plan with these guidelines in mind and couple it with proper exercise.follow it religiously atleast for a month before repeating the tests again.

    ALL THE BEST

    Hey Aarthi,

Apologies - never mind. I sh'd apologise for checking this thread late by a day b'cos my son has got hives [ food related allergies , perhaps and it has been for almost 9 days and is still there ] and So i forgot to check it y'day night . Thx a ton for posting , aarthi. Yes, the web based ones are v.confusing , sometimes contradicting too.

He has already started taking almonds and a few others that u've quoted, like water, whole wheat bread , exercises . Good that u reminded me, i sh'd totally stop butter even in murukkus and biscuits .

We've 2 months to work upon before the blood test session. Hope he performs well this time :rotfl .

Thx once again for tracing back the thread to answer despite the sinusitis that u baffle with and managing y'r ds and duly trying Mrs. Chitvish maami's recipes. I'm extremely plesased with y'r attitude.

    sabari,
not a trouble,i will be glad if my knowledge is of use to somebody..i also wanted to include few points about the method of cooking..broiling,steaming ,baking are healthy options compared to deep frying..also,when using eggs, try to stick on to just the white part and you can use the yolk for your son.if your dh has non-veg go for chicken (with all the fat trimmed) rather than red meat(lamb).never go in for processed meat like ham, sausages as not only they have high amount of salt and presevatives, they are extremely high in cholestrol and fat as well.

    all the best.

    Hi Sabari,
Even my DH faced a very similar situation couple of years back with high triglycerides. I normally use a combination of olive and canola oil for cooking very little in amount and we hardly eat out.
He tried using Salamon oil tablets (from GNC brand from USA) as we are vegetarians and it worked out like a miracle in 1 year time and now it is back normal range even though we could not do much with LDL and HDL readings...
Hence, I would definitely recommend salamon oil tablets for high triglycerides... Good luck.
