my 6 yrold has been prescribed fluticasone spray to reduce inflammation inside his nose.he's been night coughing & having stuffy/runny nose for 2months.he's had night coughing problems for the past 15 months, allergy syrups used to keep it in control. but this time even that wasn't helping so he's been prescribed the nose spray..but i'm worried about all the side effects from it?
i wonder if he can stop using it when the swelling subsides or he'll hav to keep using it after that too.
any insights from personal experiences would be very helpful..we barely sleep at night becoz of his coughing
    thnx

    Hi Priya:

My sixteen year old son has severe allergies, rhinitis, sinusitis. This year has been the most severe one. He ha been suffering from allergies for the past few years. His nose and sinuses are inflamed and he sneezes all night. He has been on Flonase(and the whole gamut of other nose sprays and antihistamines). Prolonged use of these nose sprays has caused him a lot of nose bleeds. The steroid shot also did not work. He has missed several days of school. Some of the antihistamines that worked previously has stopped working now.

The cough could be because of the nasal drainage. The night cough could be because these nose sprays can dry up the throat/nose region. Keep a bottle of water next to him and a few sips periodically will help him(my doctor's office nurse suggested this to me).

I am sure your six year old must be finding it difficult to go to school without a good night sleep and must be irritable in the day. My son is 16 and we have barely had a good full night sleep for the past six months.

The nose sprays by themselves do not have any side effects as far as I know and please do not stop without consulting your doctor. About this cough, you can talk to your pediatrician whether all that nasal drainage has caused an infection.

Good luck,I feel for you since I know exactly how helpless you feel when your child is going through this.

thnks vehera, sorry i found your reply so late...the spray did relieve his symtoms though but u hav confirmed exactly what i fear, prolonged use may make all this ineffective...initially only aa antihistamine could do the trick, now we've had to use 2 things together. hav u tried some natural remedies & found them useful? plz share..

Hi.... Have you tried NeilMed Nasal rinse for your son's nasal allergy problem?. It seems to help my son who has chronic nasal allergies too.

    Hope this helps.
