    Hi Kanaka,
One more point to add to your post.

After lighting the lamp dont rub the excess oil on your hair; (it will make you loose your wealth) general beleif. Also rubbing in your own dress is also not good.

So keep a piece of cloth in your pooja room and rub the excess oil in it and when it is totally a rag through it off and take a new piece of cloth.

    Hi Rekha,

I am also a bit confused with the fifth one. When enquired, I was told that it need to be done either with a flower or with a drop of milk iff you are going out of the house locking it for a long time (for safety measures I beleive). Other wise it could burn to the end but the thread which we use should not get burned.

To cool the lamp also we use a flower.Normally we never blow anything which is associated with God who is also sacred. One more thng is when we go out some creature like mouse could topple the lamp so it is always better to put it off before we go out.
We should put off the lamp before we retire to bed.Only when some one is dead they keep a lamp a burning right thru.

There is another wick made out of banana stem..fibre. (vazhathandu naar).. that removes sorrow. You can use kumkum also to put the lamp off.
Nowadays you get a mixture of 5 oils for deepam.
