    Hello ,

I am living in US, we may go and settle in India in another year or so, I know it is a big transition after living quite for some years in US. I want know from experienced people who went back to India and settled there on the issue of how you planned your career transfer, if you were in IT field in US, how did you apply for jobs in India, did you apply being in US or after settling down in India at one place?

Also people who worked in US in IT field, did you tried jobs in other sectors other than IT and got the good opportunity based on your IT experience, what other kind of jobs we can look apart from IT.

thanks for your input in advance,
    sujatha.

I have this same question in my mind for a long time now. Let me tell you my experience with this. We were planning to move to India some 6 months back(now, decided to stay back - that's nothing related to finding jobs in India though) and I was already on a career break of 4-5 months and we had 2 months before making the actual move. I had my CV in naukri.com and monster.com. I got the usual email updates for a couple of jobs daily. I replied back with my CV but, only 1 among 8 used to answer back saying they are unable to contact my phone(I had given US phone with the ISD code). I assume these recruiters did not notice the US number and just went ahead and dialled the rest 10 digits(obviously it would not get through!!). Then, I took some extra steps and started calling these recruiters(when I saw suitable openings) and told them that I am in US and am returning in so-and-so month. Asked them if they could take telephonic interviews. Some said yes and many said no. Ultimately, no one got back. I really don't know if this is because of my gap in career or because they have enough(and more!!) local candidates.
Personally, I feel best is to go there and search jobs.

This is my experience. Have given up job search now as we are not returning back.

Regarding other sectors, I really don't know what other jobs are available in India. We do not have too many job prosepcts for all domains/industries there. But, nevertheless, jobs should be there.

I hope ILites post their experiences here. This is a very important topic.

    Good Luck.

Thanks Neha for stepping in.. your experience is also useful here even though you didn't persue further. I dont think 4-5 months career break matters atleast in US because I got break of 2 years in my IT career and again found the job. I gave the genuine reason that I took break for maternity and taking care of baby.

4-5 months break is not big deal but now my break is 1 year:drowning. Anyway, in India they do perceive it in a bad light. Most employers there think if some women can manage without long breaks then why can't the rest:crazy!! Moreover, there is a lot of competition too there. In US, I guess a break is not looked at in a negative way. I know so many ppl who have joined the work force after 5 years, or started their careers at 30 etc. We read such things in this forum as well. I am not sure how these things work in India.
Also, I belive a break in IT is what is hard to explain to employers..in other fields I think it does not matter as much(I hope someone corrects me if this understanding is wrong..)

In India network or some contacts are plus to land a job in good position .

Neha your experience with recruiters is not unusual. I have seen same too. I have a friend who is moving back, is USC, has 15 years of total exp. 6 yeras in management. He said he never faced so much problem finding job in US as he is facing in India. He had got some offers a year back or so he wanted to negotiate but could not land one of his choice. Now he is moving back and is struggling to even get a interview.

Sending emails most of the times results to no response..

Neha a question are you not planning to return at all?

Thanks for your reply, tridev. I now know that my problem is not unique:bowdown..
Yes, contacts and networking is a big plus for key positions...
We get only 'left-over' positions if we don't use contacts... not only in job-search , I feel there everything works with contacts... I hated this when I was in India and thought this is how the world works:hide:...Now, It is such a relief for me here...we don't even need to know a single soul here and still get all facilities/jobs/documents etc..

My experience here is also same. I have seen people finding jobs through network. People who dont know anyone in job world are left scrambling for jobs, people find jobs outside contacts but chances are very less. Same is in India too. I remember my earlier days how I used to go in walk in interviews, trying my luck if I can find job. The first job I got in IT was in 1999 in Mumbai after doing graduation and post graduation for some years for 3000 rs. I had to compete with 15 people some were doing their CA finals. one were from US who had done CPA , give written test and then got selected because I had done course in my field of software. Though it was not related with the software which was to be used in the said job. To get to the job , clients I used to travel , work so hard and get so less. I used to feel bad that after so much we get so less. The office was in industrial shed as if working in a factory... oh cannot imagine I lived that life...

Just update your resume in leading job portals in India, once your resume is listed they will call you for the interview.

    Hi,

There are two approaches that were taken by two of my cousins who returned to India after a long stay in the US and both of them are in the IT field. Please see which one fits your comfort level:

    Cousin 1:

Like many here advised, cousin 1 was working in an IT company here in the US and networked for opportunities in India. How he did that? Well, as most of us working in IT fields know that there are a lot of Indians who are working with us in the same org but come from outsourcing companies like TCS, Wipro etc., he contacted someone working for TCS with whom he had good rapport. And using that introduction he went back to India.

    Cousin 2:

This might be closer to you especially since this is a female cousin of mine. When she went back to India, she had two kids, and she was trying to settle their lives along with looking for a job. She interviewed with IBM (I mention the name because its an Multi-National org and probably you could look into those companies that fit the profile) and she got the job. She did take a year long break to settle down though and as far as I know she did not face any issues. But I will probe further and update if I hear anything...
