I am 24 weeks pregnant, staying in india with my partner. I am a bit confused about many things regarding delivery some of them are:
1.Should I get epidural or not if I am not able to bear the pain, if yes then is there any side effect.
    2. If at the end I have two options of normal and c section delivery, what should I opt. Is that true that normal delivery affects your sexual life as your vagina becomes loose. And c section delivery affect your health and you become more weak.
    3. After delivery should I follow doctor completely or Should I follow old ladies in my family. because how to live," what to eat" etc are the aspects where doctors and old ladies think completely differently. Should i take the ayurvedic medicines which my grand ma is going to give me or I should completely rely of doctors.
There are so many other questions in my mind which I'll ask later, for now my post has become quite long so want to stop here only.

    Congrats on your Pregnancy !!

Though i'm not experienced ....... soon be in a week or so :)

Epidural : Is always a touchy subject, some like it some don't it depends from person to person and they stamina to take pain. Abt side effects every pill as one no matter how small it is, but does that stop us frm taking it when we are in Pain .. Well NO. epidural is the same , some ladies have few Side effects if it is not monitored or given the right way by the specialist.

Well I for sure will have Epidural, its first on the list of my birthing plan.

Normal /c section delivery- Its not in our hands, its depends on the situation, your baby's positions , hrs in labour , weight of baby , a lot of stuff.
But we all hope and pray for Normal , as you will have less complications in terms of recover. But you should be mentally prepared for both.

Yes you should follow the docs advise completely, remember their are they for a reason and they are qualified to advised us .... that to a Paid advise lol, old wife tales are good fun and just hard to Ignore or say no as we dnt want to hurt their feelings....... But if your me Just say Politely NO or listen to them and but do what your doc advised.

Like my Mom says I need to give honey to the baby once he is out :crazy:crazy I mean your kidding me. I had to show her the adverts that recently Indian channels showing abt no honey and just BF ... I'm so glad Indian gov is taken initiative to educate women on old wife tales.

    All the best !

    Hi pridelady,

    Congrats on your pregnancy.
    1. http://www.indusladies.com/forums/post-pregnancy/87003-any-side-effects-after-epidural.html
    Check out this thread.

    2. Usually doctors won’t give you an option to choose between normal delivery and c-section. It depends upon several things.

    3. I think it’s better to follow the doctor completely. I had a C-section and didn’t take any ayurvedic medicines. By God’s grace am perfectly alright.

Just prepare yourself and enjoy your pregnancy.

    Regards,
    Ansu:)

    Hi pridelady,

    Congrats!

    1. It depends on your pain bearing capabilities. I took an epidural for my first one, if I hadn't may be would not have thought about the second one. But the second one came so fast, we didn't even have time to do the epidural. During this time I discovered there is an alternative , nerve gas. So I guess its all about making an informed decision. Ask you OB what options are available before your decide. It is a medication, as in all others, there are side effects. For me, it slowed the labour and a few complications arose (Can't say 'cos of the epidural) but had a good team of doctors to handle it.
    2. Where I live, we can choose to have a C-section, if we want. But from the posts here, I guess it is probably not allowed in India. I had 3 normal deliveries, don't know how a c section would have made my marital life any different. If the loose vagina is your only concern you could go for kegel exercises (read about other forms of exercises) later on and work on contracting it. If it is really affection your marital life you could read about and consider vaginoplasty (just for your info, not my recommendation). In any case, IMO this is not a reason to consider Cesearean birth.
    3. In my case, I just listened to my instincts. Read a lot on your diet post delivery (babycenter was very useful for me) and decide on case-to case basis than adopting a policy to stick to the doc's advise or family's. If you have to say no to your family's suggestions do so politely (very difficult at that point) but keep in mind they are doing it thinking its the best for us, not to control us. Also, it will aggravate your stress if you feel you have upset them . One way of doing it is, saying yes to them politely and going by your instincts ( I know , its not very ethical, but helps 'makes life easier')

    1. Epidural yes.. first time pains are unbearable, if you get overwhlemed or involuantary/ non-cooperative due to pain and all drained out to not being able to Push out, you might endanger the child.

    2. Each section has its own plus and minus.. still me and many more I know were never keen on normal and had c-sec. Even when it was decision time both doc and mom said I dont think its feasible with me, my DH was still enquiring on normal since his mom had tuff time with bad sutures decades back... personally I feel I can maintain hygene of an abdominal cut as compared to down there and am highly susceptable to infections.

    3. Doc + old ladies.. listen to what everyone says.. try it out once and implement what you finally like.

Whatever the case I've seen a lot of Indian families insist on normal del even when baby head is large and comes under stress. All the best and stay alarmed with baby movements...

    Hi,
congrats on your pregnancy! Well, i recently had delivery experience and this one was my first delivery...even i was initially lil scared with this but then made my mind tough thinking that there are thousands of ladies deliveringd aily in the world safely, then why cant me?

On the D-day, my water broke at home but there was no labor pain...Dr induced labour and i started experiencing the much hypes *pain* of a woman's life...To tell you the truth, yes, it was kinda too much pain I had exp in my life so far, but then was less unbearable like I had thought (may be I had set the threshold very high in my mind)......after 3-4 hrs of labour I could deliver the baby normally (her head was also big)....I am perfectly alright now...

    Dont worry...everything will be smooth....

BTW, I dont think, you get an option between C-section and normal as it depends on various factors...If at all you get that, I would suggest go for normal, coz nature knows the best...so, there's no point going against nature (given that there are no medical complications involved in the case)....

    All the best!

    ~S.

1.Like other memebers have said,it depends on your pain threshold, decide at that time when you are not able to manage the pain,I had epidural since I was induced and didnt dilate for 2 days and was in so much pain, but so far I have not had any side effects, but they also tell you to sign in a form when you get a epdiural so that you should not blame them if you have a side effect.I thought I had good pain threshold but ended up having epidural, infact my doctor during my final checkup said that I have good pain threshold :)

2.Definately dont opt c-section by choice but if not other way then you can go for one, definately normal is the best by its name which says "Normal".I too thought of asking the doctor to do c-section since I was in so much pain but she never even had that idea of doing c-section on me.I dont know how I would have managed it,I had light pain because of the sutures for 20 days only after that I was so fit, infact I shoudl not tell pain I was just feeling uncomfortable to sit.please trust me,dont go c-section by choice.

    3.Doctors,atleast I did that.

    Good luck.

    1. It depends on you. If you take it and you may not know the pain, you would not be able to push when the pain is too high(Thats what docs will ask you to do). On the other hand if you do not take it and not able to bear the pain you can become exhausted.

    2. Let the docs decide which is best for you and your baby.

    3. Ayurvedic massages are good. I took it after delivery. But medicines...My dd had loose motions once I started using them.So stopped them. I took them after I stopped feeding her..

    Hi Pridelady
I think you have got all your answers by now and I will also add my 2 cents

    1) As far as epidural is concerned, I agree with everyone. If you feel you can bear the pain , skip it. If not go for it. During my first pregnancy I had labor pains for more than 36 hrs but was not dilated so we had to wait .For the first 5 or 6 hours the pain was bearable but after that it was so intense I was crying all the time. By the time the baby was ready to come out I had no energy at all and god only knows how I managed to push the baby .At that time I did not have an option for epidural , but if there was, I would have definitely gone for it.
But not everyones case is similar. Many of my friends had their babies in 6 to 7 hours after labour pains started . That is a reasonable amount of time and I guess it wont be so bad.
So depending on how your labour is progressing, it is best you make the decision.

2)If you have an option for normal or c-sec, definitely go for normal. Like satin says, the name says it all. Your body is designed for normal delivery . Recovery time is much faster with normal . Every woman's body changes after delivery but you can do a lot to maintain yourself with proper exercises . Kegels and pelvic floor exercises are very useful for strengthening your pelvic muscles.

    3) Please go by what the doctor says. Old ladies remedies were goodin old times but nowadays after delivery you are given post natal vitamins to take care of your body and if you take ayurvedic medicines it might upset your stomach. Massage etc is good , but I didnt take any of the medicines. Also as far as your baby is concerned, please try to be as natural as possible and do what the doctors say. Old ladies will tell you to give water, honey and other stuff to the baby which is better to avoid. As far as possible give ONLY your milk to the baby for the first 5-6 months. It contains everything the baby needs for good physical and mental growth and that is what the doctors will tell you.
