I currently reside in Cyprus, happily married with 2 beauties (Risha(4) & Sysha (6 mts)) When it comes to moving back to India, it often brings up certian merits and demerits in mind. But i major concern is about kids education. Truly speaking my family enjoy staying in Cyprus & yearly visit for a month in India.
    I have few questions
    1. What should be the ideal age for the kids to move back to India?
    2. How fruitful will it be for the kid to study in India as compared to other countries?
    3. Will the kids educated in Indian school be more competitive as compared to others?
    4. Since we also have international board in India, is it worth putting kids in such a school or the regular boards?

I am desperately looking for some advice to make up my mind.

    Regards,
    Ashmita

    1. Before they are old enough to dislike the inevitable inconveniences of day to day living in India. Before Risha is seven, I guess.

    2. Indian students get a better theoretical knowledge in somewhat restricted areas. Not what is called a liberal education with all round development. Arguable, as different schools tend to operate differently.

    3. Very often they are. However, Indian kids in foreign schools seem to be even better.

    4. A public school or international school is certainly an attractive (quite expensive) option. Others tend to label these schools and their alumni (and their parents) snobbish. I do not subscribe to that though.

I know one family that put in a lot of effort to get their kids back to India from USA. A lot of money was spent. The mother shelved whatever she was doing in the US, set up an establishment, got the kids into an international school and gave all her time to them. Did not pan out. The boys were older, could not handle the teachers' 'I know better' attitude, nor work with the class mates.

They went back after losing a year. Kids are happy. The elder is already with an aerospace company and the younger romping with his class mates and doing well.

In my opinion it was the problem of older kids coming to terms with the Indian way of things and not anything wrong with returning to India as such.

    Hey Arunadhri,
I can completely imagine this situation. Exactly the same thing happend to my Sister in law. They took their 5 yeard old kid to India and decided to stay back there for a few years. They told me that they faced this same exact problem that teachers in India have this ego of "I know it all" and this affects the kids' learning in some ways. They returned back to USA in the next academic year and now I guess the son is happy with the education system here.

    Hi ashmitad,
I think this is for you to decide on where you want to educate your kids. but, if you decide to move back to India then may be the younger the kid, the faster they will adjust.

OP 4 and 6 months old are young enough , they will adjust. Because parents have to make sure they get everything and are comfortable. Its parents who have to struggle with adjustment, erratic work timings etc.

Agreed the younger the kids the more soon they will adjust. Once kids pass 11 year it might be very tough if they have just visited India once a year.

Syllabus wise India is wide options . I feel Indian education system is developing kids all round. Like sports is compulsory in schools, lot of other activities are forced upon students, In US its more like if you want to then do, in sports one has to pass some test etc.... Its not that easy though there are other avenues but in India school is one stop shop. You can find karate, swimming. art classes, everything happening in one school...

    Hi friends,

I am kalpana. We r planning to go back to India in the month of January 2013. My first daughter is 7 1/2 and she is in 2nd grade and my second daughter is 4 1/2 and she is in Pre-k.

My question is if we go back to India in mid of the school year from US whether it will affect their studies in India??

Is it good to go in Jan?? or if we planned to go after the school year (after june) whether we will be able to get school admission?

    Hello Kalpana

Admission in India for pre schools starts by Jan itself. It is best that you shift during jan get the admission for your kids before the school reopens get your kids into some tution classes so that they will get use to the system of indian education. So that when they will start they school in June they will be prepared for the indian system of education and also the indian enviroment.

My family (sis in law, cousins) in Chennai are struggling with their sons. Coz their kids are slow learners not dull kids. But the schools have so many students in a class that it is very difficult to concentrate on kids. My relatives are rich so they pay a lot and put kids in fancy schools where bus picks and drops, there is swimming and lunch is provided too. They say education is like gurukulam type but honestly, there are plenty of reasons to study abroad. Teachers are very motivating abroad. They don't compare with other kids. Competition is less too and kids get time to concentrate on extra curricular activities. My niece in India doesn't like to read books (like harry potter etc). But my nephew abroad enjoys reading books. He is also good at soccer, music, speaking on stage and very independent in doing chores etc. I adore such qualities in kids. Inter personal skills is very good if kids are studying abroad. My son loves his pre school in US and he loves his teachers too. Not sure how many kids will say that in India!

I don't know if I'm wrong. Sorry if it is hurts someone.

I grew up in India and I studied in ICSE school.. I was brought up with an art class, pt class, craft class , 3rd lang class and library class weekly twice. We were supposed to give a book review for every book we read no matter which genre the book is. I got prize for best book review in my grade 6 and 7. All these were not mark oriented. I learnt handworks and painting. Boys up from class 6 have an option of choosing between gardening/carpentry. My classmates have gone stool, chairs. We had weekly inter house activities involving elocution, creative ideas and presenting new music skills. I've won prizes on various platform. In my place if a student says that she/he is from this school it is regarded as well capable best student.
I had a good exposure. When I came here and had an opportunity to interact with a high school kid, I didn't feel any different. I was exposed to all these during my school days. I was never feeling low.
Similarly when I was at my university we had classes at different building at different timings all those facilities in abroad. Project based for many courses and extensive exposure. All my masters friends in Canada used to feel excited on everything but I was used to all these and was infact amused couldn't belief that colleges/school can function different in India.
