    HI MOMMIES...:cheers

thank u for the warm welcome.. and warm hug and welcome all of u..

I was given an optional screening test list from my OBGYN office called First Trmiester screening for Down syndrome and birth defects... Has anyone in US come accross these and how many of u have done it?

Also later on, a test called CVS and another AMNEOCENTISES.

please guide me on costs associated with this, :hide: if u have done it..

Also if this is a must for our Indian ethnicity. I see test for Cystic Fibrosis is optional but mostly found among Caucasians.

    Hi barbies,

We recently went for the first screening and it is just a blood test and UScan for measuring the neck of the baby n they will see the fluid level there. These both test combination they will say the ratio eg: 1:500 or 1:1400 like that if it is 1:10000 then they risk for downsyndrome is very less we need not worry about it.

For me my insurance is covering the cost. And here everyone is asked to do the screening and depends on the screening results the CVS or AMNEOCENTISES will be suggested and that test is optional and we can choose if we want to do it or not. If our ratio level is 1:1500 or 1:10000 Doc wont suggest these test.
    Hope i'm clear. :cheers

I went for the First trimester screening in 12/13 week.. it was painless blood test & a ultrasound.. It was optional

Depending on the results of those tests the doctor will recommend further testing (if they suspect something wrong) CVS/AMINO .. but that is optional too..

It is highly recommended you do the first trimester screening if you are over 35 doesn't matter what race you are; down syndrome doesn't affect one particular race like some other genetic problems ..

I am 24 & no history of any genetic problem in family .. but I still went for the option to get the test done.. just for peace of mind

the insurance paid for the testing so I dont know the cost..

    HI barbies,

Welcome to pregnancy club.Yes I too got these tests done.... no harm, as Newdream has informed CVS and AMNEOCENTISES are done if the first screening for down syndrome shows unpleasant results... these QUAD test are again optional, its completely up to ur discretion to go for it or not, u can say NO even after u sign the papers for the same or even before u go for giving tests its completely ur call.

My insurance has covered the cost for it, u can find it out from the doctors/insurance office if ur insurrance covers it too. Most of the ladies I know has no issues getting it done.

    Hope this information helps.

Thanks you NewDream, Harpa & Devika for your valuable information. I have decided to go ahead and do it as well..

I found out insurance covers them all & labs @ 80 % after $500 deductible. I got the CPT CODES for these & they are:

    FIRST TRIMESTER SCREENING:

    1. BLOOD WORK: 84163 & 84702/4
Cost given by my lab: $ 160.00

    2. Nuchal Translucency Screening SCAN: 76801 / 76817
Cost given by my Dr. Office: $276

    Genetic Counselling: 99211

    2nd TRIMESTER SCREENING

    AFP Test - bloodwork: 82105
    cvs, amneocentisis & others: 84074, 82677, 86336

This was given to me partially from my Drs. Office & partially from the lab. I have compiled them so future mothers have it handy to clear from their insurance.

Cost given by my lab: $ 280.00
