Myth/Reality?? Men & Women- Equal footage in Marriage!!!

    I think men and women are not equal.. Though our society and feminists intend to give equal opportunities to both the genders..
    Physically a woman is weaker.. If you go back to 18-19th centuries when industrialization was in vogue, women hardly had any role in the job market.. All they were considered fit was for a job of a secretary, service kind of work..
    This is a very reflection of the fact that women are not as physically strong as men..
    Now, post indrialization era, with the booming services industry, women are finding some place in the job market..
    Even today you hardly find a woman engineer working in construction sites, or a steel mill or a cement plant.. It is mostly men there..
    Women occupy places like a doctor, a secretary, software engineer which are a service natured jobs..

    I am inclined to think that mentally as well women are different compared to men.. I still feel men have an upper hand in terms of mental ability and can better discharge their dutoes under intense pressure.. I am drawing conclusions based on the following facts..
    1. Majority of CEO's in the world are men
    2. Majority of world's primeministers or presidents are men
    3. Go up the corporate ladder, there are more men and fewer woman..
    Though there might be some exceptions to the above scenarios..

    Because of the above reasons may be our ancestors followed the typical woman as a homemaker and man as the breadwinner pattern.. They followed this pattern inorder to have a stable family..

    It also points to the fact that women are weaker than men.. It is the nature's rule that the stronger survive and weaker get suppressed.. This could explain the centuries old supression of women Eg- women being denied education, sati system, female foeticide..
    Though a lot of feminists strive to provide equality to the female gender, i dont know if it can ever be achieved in a true sense..

    I think that has more to do with the 'glass ceiling' than with brain power...

    In lot of areas, I can run mental circles around my dh, and many other male students I go to school with. In high school, on a quantitative and literary standardized test, I scored in the top 3% of the whole United States. When it came time to select finalists from our school, I remember being called into the principals office and out of the finalists, there were 2 girls (including myself) and 1 boy. The boy ultimately won, but only because my quantitative (i.e. math) scores pulled me down. Other wise in verbal and english comprehension I was in top .5% of the U.S. And on our school's academic team (which I was on), majority were girls.

    Am I physically weaker than an average man? Definitely. I struggle to lift a gallon of milk. Mentally weaker than an average man? Not a chance. It's my belief that having a vagina does not necessarily rot your brain.

    If both the sexes brain powers were to be equal, then why is there a 'Glass ceiling ' for the woman at the first place..
    I never heard of such a glass ceiling for the man..

    If her brain wasn't rotten, then why did she let herself get abused by rotten sati systems, being denied education for nearly 20 centuries.. Why didn't she have the ability to think and reason for this long?.. What were the other factors that were detrimental for her suppression?..

    I think we should compare an average man's mental ability to that of an average woman's..
    Ofcourse, there would be exceptions in every field.. I can give you a name of woman being a CEO, a woman being a primeminister, Woman ruling a kingdom..
    But i am referring to the average woman..

    Because for a long time throughout history, women raised children, men worked. It's not as much to do with brain power, as child baring capabilities and gender roles.

    So men built up these industries, governments, etc. And those in charge, set the rules. One of those rules seems to be the glass ceiling, where women are just not given as fair a chance to proceed in their careers for whatever reason.

    I highly doubt any of these women skipped with glee to go burn in the fire. People stronger physically than her, (i.e. men), probably "helped" her along with the process. It's hard for women to compete with men, when men start to use brawn over brain. It doesn't matter if the woman is a female einstein, if a man picks her up and holds her down on the fire, there's not much a woman can do!

    You can apply for admissions, but if the school doesn't let you in, it's not like you can storm the school and just plop down in a desk. You have to work towards changing the rules. Which is exactly what has happened, and now women are allowed an education. And also, for many years, women had no use of an education (and therefor might not have sought it, due to their role in the home).

    I think they would be about equal.

    Just because a woman is a stay at home mom, or otherwise not schooled, doesn't mean she isn't smart or doesn't have equal mental ability. I don't think women should have to go for a Phd just to prove they are smart. Being intelligent is so much more than the degree you've earned or the profession you work.

    Also, if you want to comare average woman against average man, you'd have to do it equally.... college educated woman vs college educated man, school drop out woman vs school drop out man, etc. I believe most people have the ability to become 'smart' if they use their potential, so it's not fair to pit a stay at home mom against a nuclear physicist and ask them questions on science. In terms of comprehending ideas, I think women and men have an equal ability.

    Now, I've got to get back to studying for the CPA exam. What with my weaker sex brain, I'll have to put in even more hours to beat those born genius boys. :rotfl

    I started this post with the intention to take my time and demolish your fallacious arguments, one sentence at a time. But frankly my dear, nothing I say will change your mind, so I have decided to save myself the trouble. The problem with your argument begins with your flawed assumption that brute strength is the benchmark biological characteristic upon which men and women should be compared. When the assumptions are wrong the rest of the argument holds no water.

    Women were made to commit Sati, they didn't choose to do so. Read some history and you will learn that they were fed opium and then burnt alive. There was no question of choice anywhere.

    I am curious as to why you loathe your own sex so much?

    You are wasting your time and barking up the wrong tree, my dear. Some folks don't quite get it... or they don't WANT to get it!!

    Yes, yes, you have to work twice as hard since you (and the rest of us womenfolk) have half the brainpower of the menfolk!!! Back to your books, girl, and don't let me see you here again until you get that CPA after your name!!! :rotfl

    I wonder if Men are so damn strong and women are matchsticks, what was God thinking when he designed woman to carry and deliver the baby. I bet he had double scotch that day :p :p

    Your statement in bold itself shows male dominance.. What had stopped women from building governments , industries to give a fair chance to the female sex.. Where was their brain power then..

    No, woman jumped into fire happily.. I know that.. But my question is why did she let herself get abused by sati system.. After that, it was a male (William Bentick) who initiated to abolish the sati system.. Why couldn't a woman standup for herself.. Even today i bet it is a highly male dominant society out there..

    Education was of use to women all through.. Not that it is only of use today.. Women were as much free as men to set up Institutions and encourage education among women..
    Even if you consider the number of inventions, men outnumber women.. That is why i am sticking to men having an upper hand in mental ability..

    All the best for your exams.. Regarding comparision between men and women in your college, we'll talk after 10-15 years.. You'll yourself notice that your male counterparts would have gone far up the corporate ladder as compared to women..
    The boys will be paid higher than girls , 10-15 yrs down the lane..
    That will be the true test of their abilities ..

    What makes you think so.. If you have a anything valid to say, i will try to think from your perspective.. If you wish to speak in the air, then i am sorry..

    Did you bother to read my post properly.. The lines of comparision were on physical strength and mental ability.. Physical strength we all agree.. There is some disagreement on mental ability.. btw there is not assumption here..

    If you let a person abuse you, he will abuse.. The important question is 'Why you are
    letting the person abuse you' .. Woman was happy or unhappy is not the question.. Why she was throwing herself open for exploitation is the question here?.. What did she do to defend herself?.. I'm sure till her time she had seen many other women meet this fate.. Did she ever bother to abolish such ghastly system..

    Sri, could you move the last 10 or so posts to general discussions? I would love nothing more than to engage the dear lady in a discussion but I don't want to set a bad precedent.

    ASG, I see no point in your trying to get a CPA and what not. Sit at home and have some babies, serve your lord and master; the men have you beat already!
