இருள் மறைத்த நிழல் - 48

மிதுனாவிற்கும் நளந்தனை ஒட்டிக் கொண்டு ஊர் திரும்ப விருப்பமில்லை தான். நளந்தன் என்ன.. அவன் தாத்தாவே கூட வருவதானாலும் ஊர் திரும்ப விருப்பமில்லை தான்.

பால்ய சிநேகிதன் என்ற ஒரே அடிப்படையில், அவள் தாத்தாவை நல்ல மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்த்து, வைத்தியம் பார்த்து.. எத்தனை செலவானதோ.. அவளுக்கும் அடைக்கலம் கொடுத்து, சொந்த பேத்தி போல அன்பு பாராட்டி.. இடையில் நடந்த குளறுபடிக்கு இவர்களிருவர் பொறுப்பல்லவே.. மனம் வெதும்பிய நளந்தன் கூட தன் விருப்பு வெறுப்பு பாராமல் அவள் தாத்தாவின் இறுதி நாள் நன்றே கழிய முடிந்த அனைத்தும் செய்தானே... தன் மனம், கோப தாபம் தள்ளி அவரின் இறுதி ஆசை.. திருப்திக்காக அவள் கையை ஒரு கணமேனும் பிடித்து கொண்டு நின்றானே.. அப்படி அவன் பல்லை கடித்தேனும் நின்றதால் தானே மூச்சு நின்ற பின்னும் தாத்தாவின் முகத்தில் திருப்தி நின்றது?! அதோடு நில்லாமல் தாத்தாவை சொந்த ஊருக்கு எடுத்து வந்து ராஜ மரியாதையோடு இறுதி ஊர்வலம் நடத்தி.. நளந்தன் கொள்ளியும் வைத்தானே..

இந்த நன்றி கடனை தீர்க்கவே ஈரேழு ஜென்மம் பத்தாதே! இதுவரை பட்ட கடனே மூச்சடைக்கிறதே.. இதற்குமேலும் கடன் பட வேண்டுமா? முடியுமா அவளால்? இனியும் ஒட்டுண்ணி போல அவர்களை ஒட்டி உறிஞ்சி அவள் வாழ வேண்டுமா? அவளுக்கு விருப்பமில்லை.

எந்த தாத்தாவின் மறைவால் அவள் மருண்டு நின்றாளோ அதே தாத்தாவின் மறைவே தன் கையே தனக்குதவி என்றும் அவள் மனதுக்கு போதித்தது. ஆம்.. அவள் தாத்தாவின் மரணமே வேளைக்கு ஏற்றபடி அவளுள் பலத்தையும் பலவீனத்தை ஏதோ விகிதத்தில் கலந்து ஏற்றியது.



அவள் தன் மறுப்பை கூறுமுன் நளந்தன், "யோசியாமல் என்ன தாத்தா பேச்சு இது? வயது பெண்ணை.. தனியாக .. என்ன மடத்.. இது சரி வராது. இவளையும் கூட்டி போங்கள்" என்று எரிச்சலுடன் மறுத்தான்.


அவளும் மறுக்க தான் எண்ணியிருந்தாள். ஆனாலும் நளந்தன் முந்திக் கொண்டு மறுத்தது அவமானமாக இருந்தது. இவர்கள் சொன்னால் அவள் உடனே தொடை தட்டிக் கொண்டு கிளம்பி விடுவாளாமா? அவள் மறுக்க கூடும் என்ற எண்ணம் கூட இல்லாமல் அவள் வர சம்மதித்தது போல் அல்லவா விழுந்தடித்து கொண்டு மறுக்கிறான்!


"நான் எங்கும் வரவில்லை. இங்கே தான் இருக்க போகிறேன்." என்று மிதுனா அழுத்தமாக சொல்ல அவளை கத்தி வீச்சாக ஒரு பார்வை பார்த்த நளந்தன் முன்னிலும் அதிகமாக எரிச்சல்பட்டான்.


"இப்போது உளறுவது உன் முறையாக்கும்?!" என்றவன்,
"இவள் சொல்கிறாள் என்று தனியே இங்கே ஏதும் விட்டு விடாதீர்கள். சுகந்தன் கிராமமும் நன்றாக தான் இருக்கும். கூடவே கூட்டி போங்கள், இடமாற்றம் மனதிற்கும் நல்லது" என்றான் கொஞ்சம் தொனியை தணித்து.


"இல்லையடா விஜி. புது இடம் வேறு, புது மனிதர்கள் மன உளைச்சல் தான். பழகாத இடத்தில், இவள் உண்டாளா உறங்கினாளா என்று அதே கவலையாக தான் நானும் இருப்பேன். சாந்து பிரிவை மறக்க எனக்கும் சுகத்துக்கும் இந்த தனிமை தேவையடா.. நான் ஓரிரு நாளில் வருவதாக தான் போகிறேன்.. ஆனால் ஒரு வேளை இன்னும் ஓரிரு நாள் தங்க சுகம் ஆசை பட்டால்.. இவளையும் கூட கூட்டிக் கொண்டு இஷ்டம் போல திட்டமிட முடியாதடா.. " நளந்தன் மறுக்க வாயெடுக்க தாத்தா அதை பொருட்படுத்தாது தொடர்ந்தார், "இவள் தாத்தனின் உயில் பிரித்து படிக்க வக்கீல் ஓரிரு நாளில் நம் வீடு வருவார். அப்போது இவள் அங்கிருந்தாக வேண்டும். அவள் உன்னோடு வரட்டும்" என்று முடித்தார்.


போரில் வென்ற பீஷ்மருக்கும் மனதை வென்ற சால்வனுக்கும் இடையே நின்ற அம்பையை இருவரும் மாறி மாறி ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள மறுக்க அன்று அம்பை பட்ட அவமானம் போல போக்கற்ற தன் நிலை கண்டு அவமானத்தில் கன்றி குன்றி நின்றாள் மிதுனா.


தன் போக்கில் அவள் பக்கம் திரும்பிய நளந்தன் அவளின் அவமான கன்றலில் என்ன கண்டானோ.. மேலும் மறுக்க வாயெடுத்தவன் சொல்ல வந்ததற்கு நேர் மாறாக "விடை பெற்றுக் கொண்டு தயாராக இரு" என்று சொல்லி நகர்ந்தான். கடுகடுப்பாக தான்.

அதற்குமேல் மறுத்து பேச இருவருமே அவளுக்கு இடம் கொடுக்கவில்லை. சொந்த ஊர் என்று பெயர் தானே தவிர அவள் இங்கு வந்த சமயங்களை விரல் விட்டு எண்ணிவிடலாம்.. தூரத்து சொந்தம் என்று ஒரு சிலர் இருந்தனர் தாம். ஆனால் எந்த முகாந்திரம் கொண்டு அவளும் தான் அங்கே தங்கிவிட முடியும்? நளந்தன் சொன்னது போல அவள் பேச்சு உளறல் தானே. மறுக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக சொல்லிவிட்டாள்.. மற்றபடி அவளுக்குமே இங்கிருப்பது சாத்தியமில்லை என்றே தோன்றவும், அவளுக்கும் மேற்கொண்டு மறுக்க வலுவான வாதமில்லை.. அதனால் வலிந்து சென்று மறுக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் ஊர் சென்றதும் அங்கேயே தங்கிவிடவும் நினைக்கவில்லை. எப்படியும் வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறுவது என்ற அவள் கருத்தில் மாற்றமுமில்லை. அது எப்படி, எப்போது என்பது தான் கேள்வி. அதையும் ஊர் சென்ற பின் அனுமானிக்கலாம் என்று தற்காலிகமாக தள்ளி போட்டாள் மிதுனா.

வெறும் தலையசைப்போடு அறிந்தவர், தெரிந்தவர், சுற்றம், சுற்றி வளைத்த சொந்தம், தாத்தாக்கள் என அனைவரிடமும் விடைபெற்ற மிதுனா நளந்தனோடு காத்திருந்த டாக்சியில் ஏறி கொண்டாள்.

கார் பறந்தது. வழியில் நளந்தன் எதுவும் பேசவில்லை. கதவு சரியாக சாத்தியிருக்கிறதா என்று ஒரு முறை அவன் கை நீட்டி சரி பார்த்ததோடு சரி. ஜன்னல் வழி வெறித்தாள் மிதுனா. மரங்களும் செடிகளும் விர் விர்ரென எதிர் திசையில் ஓடின. சில்லென்ற காற்று முகத்தில் அறைந்து மோதியது. எதையும் உணராது வெறிச்சோடி கிடந்தாள் மிதுனா.

காரின் அசைவும் மனதின் அயர்வும் ஆளை அடித்து போட தன்னையறியாது அரைகுறையாக கண்ணயர்ந்த மிதுனா திடுமென காரின் வேகம் மட்டுப்படுவதை உணர்ந்து கண் விழித்தாள். நளந்தன் தான் நிறுத்த சொல்லியிருப்பான் போலும். அத்துவான காட்டில் கார் நின்ற காரணம் புரியாது விழித்தவளை பார்த்தவன், "படுப்பதானால் படுத்துகொள்" என்று இரத்தின சுருக்கமாக சொல்லி முன் இருக்கைக்கு மாறி கொண்டான்.

அவள் சொக்கி விழுவதை கண்டு அவள் வசதிக்காக அவன் யோசித்து செய்த செயல்.. செயலில் இருந்த கனிவு முகத்திலோ குரலிலோ இல்லை!

கார் மீண்டும் வேகம் எடுத்தது. நளந்தன் சொல்படி காலை நீட்டி பின் சீட்டில் படுத்த மிதுனாவுக்கு என்ன முயன்றும் உறக்கம் பிடிக்கவில்லை. அவன் அருகில் இருந்தது தான் வசதி போல தோன்றியது. கொட்டு கொட்டென்று விழித்து கொண்டு படுத்து கிடக்கவும் முடியவில்லை. ஏதேதோ பாரம் நெஞ்சை அழுத்தியது. காரின் வேகம் வேறு தூக்கி தூக்கி போட்டது. இதற்கு பதில் முன்பு போல ஜன்னலை வெறிப்பதே மேல் என்று தோன்ற எழுந்தமர்ந்த மிதுனா உயிரே போவது போல "நந்தன்!" என்றலறினாள்!

I agree that Mithuna being educated and all, she is pretty much capable of staying alone.

She left with Nalanthan that night, not to stay with him forever. It was a temp arrangement in her mind. refer to highlighted lines above..

She just went with grandpa's suggestion, because she wanted to deal the matter diplomatically. She did not want to create a scene there, it will be a disgrace to the elderly person. Besides, she herself thought staying back in that remote village is no good. Plus, she can always move to the hostel as soon as she reaches the city. That was her plan.

Now coming to why she did not retaliate when Nalanthan was hard on her,
This is how Mithuna thought about the whole thing:
While Nalanthan should not have suspected her & on top of that has no rights to use such strong words to accuse her, there are few elements that stopped her from showing her retaliation that rude.

1.Mithuna thinks that situation made Nalanthan suspect her. She put herself in his shoes and finds that Nalanthan's frustration, anger and everything are stemming from the very basic fear of losing the love of his life-Mithuna. People do not all act appropriate at all times. Knee jerk reaction is common response. And Nalanthan is no exception.

2.Mithuna is struck with her Grandpa's sudden demise, at this point of time, Nalanthan's behavior has taken a back seat in her mind. To retaliate is the last thing she had in mind. All she wanted was go back to city, stay alone, digest the happenings, move on with life.

3.Mithuna was moved by all the things Nalanthan & his grandpa did to keep her grandpa in a state of peace as much possible as can be. Pls refer to the bolded & colored parts above in my quote. She was able to appreciate his goodness though he hurt her.

4.Mithuna still loved Nalanthan. Does not mean that she was still longing to marry him but, she could not stand the thought of hurting him back, because that is how much she loves him.

When a loved one hurts us, we can
1. retaliate & regret
2. retrospect & react

Mithuna chose the 2nd option.

It is easy to tell the grandpa, "I know what to do. I can look after myself. You need not bother. I am no inferior. Let me go." She did not want to hurt his feelings. So she went along with him, at the same time was firm in her mind not to stay for long under their custody.

Similarly, it is easy to yell back at Nalathan, "Who are you to accuse me? How dare you speak like that to me? Damn you, I will never ever see your face again. Get lost" But instead she chose to see what it is that made her dear Nalanthan loose his cool. She was empathetic to his knee jerk reaction to the shock he received.

Also Mithuna has the mental composure to appreciate the goodness in her man looking past his shortcomings. He went out of his way to make her grandpa at death bed to feel good. She felt indebted to him.

While she did not come out rigid in her behavior that does not mean she is not rigid in her mind.. She is rigid to go lead a life alone like you guys said. But she is making her way out smooth and steady without hurting too many in the process.

Dears, little patience, little bending, little forgiving- all while still holding onto the core principles is not a sign of weakness.
