Upto 2nd he studied in Matriculation syllabus.. there he was able to score 80% . last acedamic year we moved him to cbse chennai.. Now he find very difficult to cope up with the syllabus.. am getting frquent complaint from his teachers that he is not attentive in class. (their complaints make me to worry lot) He is very smart in studies.. only difficulty is if the question is twisted he will be able to answer it.. and now he became very slow in his class.. i know i could bring him up.. me and my hubby working as engineers in a s/w concern. I need suggestions from you gals to bring my kid up.. He works hard and i know he will do his best..:thumbsup

CBSE syllabus is tough compared to Matriculation and your son is obviously finding it difficult to coupe with that, talk to him and find out what he is saying and you can switch him back to Matriculation.

    Chitra,

I am assuming that with the change in syllabus, your son also had to change schools, teachers and friends. Are you sure it is not one the other factors that are behind his suffering grades? How long has he been in this new school? Does he have friends? Does he like his teachers? These are some of the questions you need to find the answers to before you can accurately pinpoint the reason for your son's inattentiveness in class.

The fact that he finds it difficult to answer questions that are not straight out of his textbook or notes, and are 'twisted' as you say, indicates a lack of understanding of the subject matter. A lot of children learn to do well by memorizing answers and techniques. This is unfortunately encouraged by our school system but doesn't help in the long run. Focus on helping him understand the subject matter; Not just a step by step technique to solve a problem but the fundamentals behind it. Your son is too young for you to be overly worried about his performance in class. At his age, it is more important to inculcate in him a love for learning.

Moving him back from CBSE to Matriculation board is only a temporary solution. As he moves up to the higher classes, the course material will only get harder and he will face the same problem irrespective of which board he studies in. So instead of looking for a quick and dirty fix, try to get to the root of the problem. Help strengthen his grasp of the fundamentals and make learning interesting and fun. Once he understands the why's of a problem, he will automatically excel at the how's.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.. But what i feel is changing the board will not solve the problem. since frequent change of atmosphere will also affect him .. correct me if am wrong..

    Hi Gauri,

Thank you for your prompt response. He has been in the new school for the past one year.. Yes he has friends but when i ask his friends name today he will say one name and tomorrow another name. When i went to attend the parents meeting one of his classmates told me " aunty he doesn't know addition itself" i felt really upset.. Communication also became a problem there. In his old school teahers and friends used to speak in tamil but in the new school they communicate in english.. I think that should have also affected him. But now he started framing sentences. Me and my hubby started training him at home..

His Principal suggested a special educator to bring him up in this academics.
When we met her , he gave some test to him and analysed. He told us that his school level is 3rd standard but his understanding level is lower than that. so lets train to bring him o his present class level. She said it may take 8 months to bring him to his present level. He started attending the class. Everyday one hour class. Now in chennai we have summer vaccation, Teachers promoted him to the next class with warning.. This the current situation.. Now he has gone to his grandparents place to enjoy the holidays..

    Cheers,
    Chitra:)

Let me list all the board in the order of difficulty

    State Board
    Anglo-Indian Board
    Matriculation
    ICSE
    CBSE

First speak to him and find out what your son is saying and then you can get a better idea about his difficulties. You have not written anything about what your son is saying on this post.

    Chitra,

We can only guide you towards making your decision and not deciding for you. Comeon don't get irritated, all our friends have given you a good idea about how it is.

Do understand each system of education has its own positive and negative, along with having its own methods of teaching, evaluating.

Matric would have been rote learning.
Cbse at the 2nd/3rd level wants the kids to understand and the evaluation is based on that. i am not privy to the school in which your son studies but last year, the system of evaluation changed even for cbse.

I would say, give him time to adjust, learn the ways rather than shifting him back to matric, frequent transition will definitely effect your child if it is one reason for his lagging.

this is one thing you should work at. is it only academically his understanding is lower or is it over all, and what age was he put in lkg. because some kids who appear to have a lower understanding, were definitely in school earlier than was required. one of dd's classmate is 13 and he is real slow according to his teachers. (they are in 10th..where the ideal age would be 14+-15)

If the school stressed on the special education, i would suggest go for a evaluation, to relieve yourself of the tension.

and also i would direct you to this thread, where one of our ilites is discussing problems varying from learning to behavioral, maybe you can get pointers in that direction.

Do not look at short term solution, look for the actual cause. and we are here to to help you.
