Dear Ilites, I was teaching my second Daughter few months ago the animal kingdom. There it was mentioned for Goat its Kid. thens She asked me "amma why are you saying 'My kids to aunty?' here the baby goat is called kid okya" I was stunned and my thought immediately was to share this with you all. But then I stopped myself from proclaiming it to all and started practising it myself. Its working very well. I feel that I give respect to them whenever i say Children. We often say KIDS instead of children. May be we think its a fancy way like mom & pop. But the real meaning of kid is different. Isn't it? THINK ... Do we treat our children as animals? Just imagine if someone is calling you cow, Goat, sheep how will we react? :rant.... Oops just sharing my thought with you all thats it nothing to offend anyone or anything. "START SAYING CHILDREN" MY HUMBLE REQUEST TO YOU PARENTS.
I am not offended but at the same time I dont think there's any disrespect intended to children by using the word; its just slang usage and many words in English do have such multiple meanings. In any case I call my DS kitten, chick, calf (all in Tamil) and I dont see how this is any different Vanathi.
Meena, it was cute of your daughter to ask so but i agree with Vanathi on this. there are many such words in any language and it cannot be taken literally so! Latha
Dear Vanathi, I Agree with you fully. I also thought the same way as you did when I called them like that (esply Kannukutti ... May be bcoz Ilike it alot). I thought its my way of showing my love for them. But after the query from her I felt bad and told myself may be she needs something else than this. Thats why I said I practised it for 7 - 8 months .... reality it was difficult and I corrected myself quite a lot of time. On the other hand my first DD never asked me such questions ... children of same mother but diffnt from each other .... ... Thanks for the First FB dear.
Dear Latha, We as adults think differently and children of this age think differently. Even I was taken back so much with this kinda question. I just shared my experience with you all thats it. Just to let others know anyone can think differently. Thanks for stepping in amidst your busy travelling in IL .... ;-)
I am afraid that I do not quite agree. Kid is a word that also means a child or youngster of either sex. The fault is in not teaching the kid (sorry for that, strictly intentional) all the meanings of a word. Children are not human. They are DIVINE! Arunadhri
Hi, I could not resist answering. That was pretty cute & sharp of your dd to pick that up from your conversation. But I couldn't get why kid should be an objectionable usage since it does have multiple meaning & one of them means young child of either gender. Could be an younger sibling too. Maybe you could tell her that too. It might help her to understand using the word kid in no way means lesser love or adoration or respect to one's offspring.
Good thinking Lotus!!! I never thought abt it in this way ... thanks for bringing in the light. I am not saying its an objectionable word. It was just a REQUEST thats it. When you have a Word esply for our own children ... thats it.
