    Hi Ladies,

My son is 4.5months old and not started anything other than BM & FM(Similac Neosure). Ped asked us to start rice cereals mixed with BM but still I have not started anything yet. My questions for you:

    1. Is it good to start rice cereals now?
    2. Like in india can we get nestum/cerelac and all in USA?
    3. Rice cereals itself comes in diff types(plain, mixed, oat meal) which is good to start with?
    4.Anybody started semi solid @4.5months?

Rithik takes both BM & FM very well. I have no issues giving him both.

    Anitha,

It is o.k to give rice cereals @ 4.5 months but feed him with a spoon. Do not put rice cereal in a bottle!! Infact I started DS with Rice cereal @ 4 months. Fed him only once a day that too may be 1.5 spoon of cereal diluted with breast milk/formula. But unfortunately he got constipated with rice cereal. So I had to switch to oatmeal. Gerber has single grain cereals. They have both rice and oatmeal. They also have mixed grains but don't start with mixed grains yet. Start with single grain cereal.

You can get cerelac here in Indian stores. Atleast at the place we live, we get it at the Indian stores. But it is ridiculously expensive. I think one can is $ 10 approx. Also cerelac contains milk. So I think its better off to hold on cerelac atleast until your LO is 6 months. I think that's what it says on the can too.

Last month when I ordered diapers from Diapers.com, I found Happy Bellies cereal with DHA on sale. Even "happy Bellies" brand is highly rated. So check that out too.

At this age, any sort of semi solid food is only for practice. Breast milk /formula still forms main part of diet and nutrition.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi sudha,

    thnx for prompt reply dear!
ped asked me to mix cereal with BM and feed him thru bottle(avent brand has got rice cereal nipples seems).. we tried to buy one but a lady in store asked us just to put few extra holes in medela nipples and asked us to use that... am confused so still waiting to start it.. may be once he is 5mon old planning to give him..

if in bowl & spoon then what is the mix ratio? milk:cereal? let me know.. i was asked to add 1tea spoon for 1 oz milk.. R takes 85ml(3oz).. so i need to add 3sp cereal? is it ok or toomuch for R?

    Anitha,
Why did the Paed ask you to add cereal to the bottle? Is it because of your son's reflux?? is the reflux under control now? If the reflux is under control then I wouldn't suggest you add cereal. It is unnecessarily a choking hazard. If the reflux is not under control then you might want to go ahead with your paed's instructions.

I don't know how much cereal to add if you are adding in a bottle. I never had to do it with my son. When I fed him in a bowl and spoon I just got the cereal in a running consistency initially. As he got older, I thickened the mixture.

If you decide to add cereal in the bottle then use the nipples specially meant for thicker fluids like cereal. Try not to use the existing nipples with extra holes. If the hole you make gets bigger then your son might choke. So try to use only those nipples which are meant for cereal. I don't think they are expensive!!

    just my opinion!!!

Anitha, I think 'Juniors' has cereal feeding bottles.I saw them here at lifestyle.Anyways, like all other ladies have said, try to give cereal with spoon and please avoid the bottle for cereal..
I give Ragi with banana in the mornings to Ved and applesauce prepared at home in the afternoon. Its been 2 days since I have been preparing applesauce instead of using Gerber...Ved is 4.5 months old.

peel the apple, grate it/ cut into small pieces, boil with little water, cool and blend.
