    Hi All

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and had my ultrasound. The doctor said that the baby weighed 9oz. at this stage. Is this normal?

Also, can anyone tell me how many ultrasounds will we normally have in the duration of a pregnancy? I have only had 2 so far, the 1st one was at around week 9 and now the second one.

    Thanks!

    Hi Peartree,
the usual wt of fetus at 20 weeks is 10-11oz. Some babies weigh less. So don't worry. if it is worrying the doc will tell you.
as far as ultra sounds go. the first one is done at 8-9 weeks to check whether it is an ectopic pregnancy or not. the next one is at 11-14 weeks which is the NT scan. to check for down's syndrome.
These days the doctors are using ultrasounds only to check the growth. In the next visit please ask your gyno why she hadn't done any scans.

Two ultrasounds is normal. One at 6 weeks to check viability and another at 20 weeks to check overall development. If everything is normal at 20 weeks you probably won't have anymore.

    Hi Hansika and gauri,

    Thanks a lot!

    Hansika

I did not have a scan at 11-14 weeks! At the ultrasound, the technician said the baby weighed 9 oz. (254 grams), but she also said that it is normal. Is this weight something I should worry about?

    Gauri

The doctor who performed the ultrasound said everything was normal with the baby, does that mean I will not have anymore ultrasounds performed for the entire pregnancy?

    Thanks so much again!

It depends on your Dr. If they feel that they need to monitor the baby's growth then they will schedule one. In my case my DS had an obstruction in his kidney so they scheduled another one at 26 weeks. By that time the obstruction had cleared so I did not have any further ultrasounds.

If your regular checkups are uneventful and there are no concerns you probably won't have anymore. Insurance companies don't like to pay for ultrasounds so Drs use them only when necessary.

Don't worry about the your baby's weight. Many factors affect baby weight. Your own weight, age, height, baby's sex, your ethnicity. Just eat well and take long walks. Not all babies gain at the same pace. Most of the weight is gained in the 3rd trimester and you are not there yet. So don't stress.

    pear,

If the 3rd month NT scan was combined with the Anamoly scan, it is still ok.. Nothing to worry.

Also, when your doctor or the sonologist tells you, the weight of the baby is OK.. it means it is ok. :)

DOnt get tensed. I know it is very normal for us to worry and wonder wether the baby is gaining the right weight. But, trust me, keep your mind and body healthy and everything will be fine.

Come back when you are in your last trimester, you will write..
God, am just not able to move around easily ! ;) That is when you know,
my baby is grown up now ! Enjoy your second trimester well !

The next scan usually will be after 35 weeks and nothing before that unless the doctor feels they need one. After 35 weeks, is to see the position of the baby's head.

You can also go for a 4D scan after 25 weeks which will get you a peek on the chubby one growing inside you !! But do it after 25 weeks only , so that you get to see some fat here and there.. :) it is a treat to see them then !

I know I have to learn to relax and not freak out so much and understand that no 2 people will have mirror image pregnancy experiences. But it is so hard to put it into practice.

Even my gyn keeps telling me that I should relax and not just imagine random things!

    Thank you so much!!!

    Pear ...

It is absolutely ok to freak out.. But, while you do that you must remember, there is your LO within who goes through stress as well ! I very well understand when you say hard to put into pratice.. But, when you start to think on behalf of your LO.. you will freak less ! :)

In no time, you will start to write like what I do to other women who write their fears here.. I wait for that day, so that we can just smile at each other.. :thumbsup

Dont worry dear everything will go fine. Of course worries is a package deal with pregnancy because we constantly think of the baby . But dont stress yourself . Relax. At times when you are scared or worried just pray to God for the well being of your LO. Trust your doctor and eat healthy.
