Helloo..ladies, I have been living in US for last 10 yrs and I have probably worn sarees in these 10 yrs and before that - probably 10 or 15 times. Every time, either someone helped me or someone adjusted my saree after I wore it.

I have shopped many heavy work..silk sarees and also party sarees when ever I visited India for weddings. I had help in wearing them back home, but It is a big hassel to wear them here. I have many parties coming up and I want to showoff my sarees. Can any one tell me how to wear saree in stylish way?

I have problem putting the stepped pallu (but that makes me look slim), I've problem with tying the saree snugly around the back and bottom, I also have problem with the pleats (their direction and proportions etc). If you are a expert Saree woman...please enlighten some of us Saree-illiterates (I don't know why I am the only one who is like this in my family. My mom and sisters look perfect in their sarees.)

Please help. (I've already researched websites..no use!!)

    Sister,

You can convert your saree to ready-to-wear saree.. so that you can easily wear them without any difficulty.

There are some services available for that.. Please try that..

If it is a normal chiffon type then I am sure you can manage.Have a friend help you .
For heavier ,silk sarees what I do is :
    • I wear the saree at night or day before to pre arrange the pleats.
    • After arranging the pleats I use a big black hair pin to keep it in place .
    • I take off the saree and iron the pleats using a light iron setting.
    • I secure the pleats on top and bottom using Black hair pins.
I do the same for the pallav. After practising a few times you will get it.Apparently air hostesses do this.
You will need a dozen Black hair pins.I don't like using safety pins because they spoil the saree but you can use that too.

It has been many years since I wore a saree too. But I am very good at it. :)

To arrange the pallu in steps, first arrange the pallu like that, pin it and then wrap it around.

Pleats - take help from your husband. ;-) ( I have a thin waistline so I usually end up with many pleats - definitely need help if it is pattu or designer sarees to bring them under control and my DH comes to my rescue)

    Again pin the pleats beforehand.

Let me know if you want to know anything specific..

Hey everyone, Thanks for the tips. I was able to wear a half way decent saree yesterday for a party putting the pallu in place first and then taking care of the pleats. Though I still need to perfect it, I would be looking forward to more occasions where I can display my beautiful sarees and the jewelery sets that go with the sarees. Thanks a bunch for the tips.
