Aiyo! The chimney is falling!

During my childhood days, I was a weakling health wise and also very timid by nature.

We were four siblings altogether. My eldest sister was married off when I was just six months old. My second sister was married off when I was between seven and eight. My brother who was two years and nine months older than me and my younger sister were staying with my mother and my father was staying at Jabalpur.

After my sister’s marriage, whenever my mother had her monthly cycles, the two of us- my brother and I had to do the household chores. My youngest sister was too small at the time. While my brother took charge of cooking I did the cleaning, washing and other small errands. There was no electricity in the house and we had to light hurricane lamps and wall lamps. One night after dinner, I tried to remove the wall lamp from the wall to take it to the hall and its chimney was loose and was about to fall. I was afraid that the chimney would break and started shouting, “Aiyo! Anna, the chimney is falling.”
My brother who was standing nearby managed to catch it before it fell down. As the glass chimney was very hot, his hand got burnt and the whole night he was suffering with burning pain. My mother was giving instruction to keep the fingers cool by winding the fingers with a wet cloth.
When I think about it now, I feel like laughing about my foolishness.
But that night I kept crying out of guilt, since I felt that it was because of my carelessness that he was suffering.
My poor brother was consoling me by telling me, "Don't worry. I will be okay in the morning."

Dear PS,

I came in post-haste, intrigued by the title! Reminded me of Asterix and the Gauls who are only afraid of the sky falling on their head!

Childhood memories are the best of all, reliving them is rejuvenating and refreshing experience

Enjoyed your post thoroughly, PS... Is this part of the interesting autobiography that you are currently penning?

Look forward to more of the same kind,

Love,
PS

Dear Pushpa mam,

Your writing reminded me of my childhood memories also. Its always special isnt it:). Your brother at that age is also so caring and loving and matured, he didnt hold u responsible, for his burning his hand. That was really great.

When siblings get together after a long time really it is fun to remember those bygone days.

Thanks for peeping in and sharing your thoughts,
