Remembering those days when I wore Pavadai

To share about my experience with pavadai.... i have wore pavadai very few times...

In bangalore, 11th is 1st PUC in college... so on my first day to college i wore pavadai (as that the newest dress in my wardrobe). As i entered college, degree students ragged me asking me to sing a bhajan ( i didnot know any sang one ganesha vandanai paatu) and escaped from them... after that i never wore pavadai to college...

i once wore langa dhavani to a temple in bangalore... each and every person saw as if i was a alien, that day i put a big namaskar to that topic and never wore pavadai again...

My daughter always says pavadai as chennai silks deepavali.... and it is her fav too.... she has already worn some six sets and now she has two sets.... i prefer silk cotton for her because it is apt for chennai weather...

Your post brings back nostalgic memories of our childhood when wearing a Paavaadai and spinning Thattaa-Maalai Thaamarai Poo was such fun... and later in the teenage years, the joy of wearing a Paavaadai-Daavani... I had a Thamarai-poo coloured Paavaadai with a black border and used to wear a dark-pink Daavani...


You know when we had a Fancy dress competition for all the apartment residents, young and old, we contemplated wearing Paavaadai Daavani but no one had the courage as we felt one may look rather ridiculous at our age!!! And none of the youngsters wanted to dress up as a 40s - 50s teenager...

Paavadai davani was my favourite dress. I had a good collection. Since I was the youngest I used to recieve all under size ones from my sisters and new one too. I still love paavaadai dhavani. For my two DILs I got one each and they wear on occasions, look very beautiful in that.

But what all we said, chudithar is the safest for young girls I feel.

wow pavadais really look cute on anyone, especially children.

For my DD i stitched 5-6 pavadais, which even she likes to wear, on navaratris and other functions.

As far as for me, i used to wear pavadai occassionally and i was having only one pair.

nowadays even in native place nobody wear pavadais:bowdown.

These days I have seen in some movies the latest pavadai davanis. Romba stylish they are and very pretty. Half sarees are worn a bit differently I think in those movies and what combination of colours ..... Beautiful! I never wore pavadai davanis. Pavadais and blouse ofcourse I did and mostly ellam amma's saree cut panni stitch panna pavadais. When I was in college, in our hostel my roommate (from Erode) used to have lots of half sarees. I remember borrowing from her and wearing to college. Somehow felt that I was grown up all of a sudden:hide:. If worn neatly and decently, it is a very pretty costume and has its charm all the time. Temple visits during college days used to be great. Everybody kept borrowing pavadai davani from each other and we used to dress up nicely and go. Now it feels very silly. But surely good fun those days.

I wore them during my teens..the ones I remember most is Lotus color with green border, yellow with blue border, sungudi set and another pink glass work pavadai from Kashmir,which my grandma bought me.
My daughters too like pavadai and dhavani..and they wear it to temples or to any other functions.

how cute viji..I too love paavadais and have worn quite a lot to temples and music classes.my paati used to buy me two every vacation.
let me try and recollect..maroon with green.(puff sleeved blouse haha ) orange with green,black with blue,yellow with maroon and the last one when i was in the tenth std was copper sulphate blue with dark blue border which later i wore as dhavani too to please my mother.but somehow i never liked dhavani.

my daughter too has worn a lot(surprisingly, because her cousins in india have not worn as much as her ) and every vacation in India i used to buy one for her.in tamil movies i love to watch the cotton pavadais..lovely colour combinations,and that with malliga poo and temple jewellery...real traditional beauty,i feel.
