I live in FL, what are your terms? I think you may need to post your details in IL directory for us to contact. It may help lots of ppl living in US but in suburbs where no/less carnatic music teachers are available. BTW where did you learn?

You have posted under Housing, you should have posted under personal services. :drowning

Online Violin and Vocal Carnatic Music classes with special Theory coaching

    Namaste all,

I am a new member to your group. I find that many of you are interested in Carnatic music. Anyone who listens, sings, teaches or speaks about Carnatic music is said to have an amsha ( a part of)Godess Saraswati.

I like to introduce myself. I am a musician by profession ( both violin and vocal performer) and have performed over 700 concerts all over India and abroad. I have a good experience as a Muisc teacher as I have trained many budding musicians to performers in The National Academy of Music. My training was under great music maestros.

I have been teaching music - vocal and violin through online classes for many years now. Regular and disciplined classes offered at very nominal rates. Theory education is given special emphasis as it is the base for bulding up the music knowledge in the student.

If anyone of you is interested in learning the Divine art, please write to me. please don't mind me saying this : Only serious learners admitted. Age grp from 4 - 50 years.

Namaste and God bless you all

    Hi Vijikrish,

Sorry...I got back after a lllooooong while! I was busy getting things arranged for a vacation of ours that I did not get on to Indusladies.....

I normally do not post ads and I totally forgot about this one!

    A few things about me:

I have learned/learning music from a very young age till date...I have been bestowed with great gurus and I also hail from a family of musicians. My granddad Rajagopala Thathachariar was a disciple of the renowned musician Tiger Varadachar. My dad who was my initial guru is a trained carnatic/western music vocalist who passed on the passion to us children.
I have been an artist in the All India Radio, Chennai and also won competitions conducted by AIR, apart from others.
I hail from the Semmangudi school of music and have had the privilege of learning from members of that great family!
some of the great gurus who have guided me are

Smt. Lakshmi Ramanan -A great foundation,
Smt. Annapoorna Nagarajan - Performed December season concerts under her able tutelage
Smt. Saraswathi Thyagarajan (Grand daughter of Semmangudi mama)
Smt. Jayalakshmi Santhanam - my brother-in-law's athai paati
Smt. Suguna Varadachari - my aunt

Hope this info. helps you. I will cut and paste this information in the IL directory.

    Hello "Appuhere",

Good to know that you are interested in Violin. Online lessons can be had though many voice messengers like gtalk, skype, msn etc..In my experience skype gives the best voice clarity. You need to have a webcam if you are a beginner.

Do let me know details about you and your background in music.

    Regards

    Learning Carnatic Music

    Hi,

I recently decided to learn Carnatic music. I am in my mid-20s and I never had any prior experience or exposure to Carnatic music. My career demands a high-portion of my time and so learning from a Guru is not an option.

I have been hunting online resources that would teach me Carnatic music. My primarly goal is to get enough knowledge to enjoy the music in concerts. Right now everything sounds Martian.

I have just started practising from this site (by an Indian-American Prof).

The structure of the tutorial follows this outline.

    1. Sarali Varisai
    2. Janta Varisai
    3. Dhatu Varisai
    4. Melsthayi Varisai
    5. Mandhra sthayi Varisai
    6. Alankarams
    7. Geethams & Swarajitis
    8. Varnams
    9. Kirthis
If I am not mistaken 'Kirthis' are performed in concerts right? So I believe when I reach that stage of the course I should be able to walk into any concert and enjoy the music.

Am I on the right track?

I have come across lots of Sanskrit (which I don't know) too. I do know Tamil & Telugu. Is knowing Sanskrit a pre-requisite to learning/enjoying Carnaitc music concerts? I want to understand & parse the words the artist employs. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Re: Learning Carnatic Music

    rastor,

so nice to know another cmlover. check out my blogs on music, to know i am one like you..no formal training, it is all kelvignanam together with the interests.

Shivkumar has given exhaustive and extensive lessons.

Krithis are not only for concert level. the krithis are taught in between depending on the learner's grasp and interest. the krithis are taught even at the varnam levels.

both my dd and ds learn cm. so from what i grasp from them, suppose the kids are taught abhogi varnam, the master tries to teach them a simple krithi in abhogi.

my dd is into varnams for 3 years, and she has learnt around 10-15 keethanais in between.

Regarding language, knowing the meaning of the lyrics, before singing really gives the song a better dimension, as you get involved.

today you get lot of books that give you the explanation of the lyrics in english/tamil. so you can definitely understand, enjoy singing.

Not all artists are conversant or correct in their pronunciations. sometimes even they goof up.

    all the best.
