    A piece of advice

    Hello Ladies

I am 15 weeks pregnant. Since one week my I had been having a terrible tooth ache and was not able to eat anything. When I went to the dentist, he told me that it was due to a wisdom tooth eruption and that it's better I get it extracted if it's causing me so much pain.

First of all, I was too scared to get it done because of the pregnancy because I read all over the internet that X-Rays are very harmful etc. etc. But many sites also said that any dental work is better done during the second trimester and that dentists usually take enough precautions while working on a pregnant woman. Finally, with a letter of permission from OB/GYN, I got the 2 troublesome teeth extracted. It was a horrible experience for me, not because the dentist was bad or anything, but the pain and the nervousness and top of that, constant fear that something might affect the pregnancy. Since they do not give general anesthesia for pregnant women, I was aware of what was going on and that only made it all the more scary! I have now been presecribed antibiotics and painkillers that are apparently safe to take during pregnancy, but I am still trying as much as possible to avoid taking the painkiller.

So all those ladies who are TTC, I sincerely advice a dental check-up also to add to the list of "things to do" before getting pregnant, and if needed, getting anything teeth-related fixed in the beginning itself. The doctor that performed the surgery on me was an Indian and he said that Indians tend to neglect their dental health a lot and that usually manifests in the old age.

Dr.Preethi, you are a dentist. Please let me know if this is wrong information.

    Thank you!

    Hi Peatree,

Thanks for stopping by and giving this advice.I hope you are feeling better now.DH was repeatedly telling me to visit Dentist before we start treatment but I am neglecting it.:hide: .I think it is definitely worth including in checklist before any treatment.I will get my Dental checkup done at the earliest just to be safe.

    PERFECT ADVICE !! :thumbsup:thumbsup

It is a must-see for every lady on TTC , pear ! :) You are soo right on that. it is always better to attend to your dental woes before getting pregnant. I, got all my wisdom tooth removed long back because I knew that it will trouble me during my pregnancy. :) Regular dental check up is always good ! Getting rid of any troublesome wisdom tooth before getting pregnant is all the more good !

I think the reason why they are refusing to treat you is because you are already in your 3rd trimester as I can see from your ticker. I read on the internet and the dentist told me that usually the first and the third trimester they do not perform dental work because in the 1st trimester the baby's organs are not developed fully yet and 3rd trimester, to ask the woman to lay on her back for a long time is not advisable.

When I had not yet gone to the dentist, just chewing on cloves (not oil) gave me a lo of relief. Also, keeping a piece of garlic with a little salt on it also helped me, though no one would even come near me when I had the garlic in my mouth. But at that point, I was in so much pain that I was beyond caring!!

    Hope you fell better soon.

    re: Dental Problems during pregnancy!

i am social worker in chennai based on newyork.i enquired my favouirit doctor dr.akbar at ALL SMYLES COSMETIC DENTAL CENTRE at alwarpet, chennai, india.he advised me the following
1.if you got badbreadth or bleeding gums,do scaling/cleaning with your dentist
best time is when expecting pregnancy and during 2nd trimester in left lateral position
i heard a shocing news that according to american academy of periodontologists research they came to know that teeth plaque/calculus is one of the risk factors for pregnancy epulis(a kind of growth in gums during pregnancy) and also calculus can cause a condition called gestational diabetis during labour
also use a alcohol free mouthwash like rexidineplus.two times a day

    2.avoid tetracycline/minocycline/doxycycline antibiotics during pregnancy

3.if got tooth pain take a plain paracetamol analgesic only and visit your nearby dentist
if it is severely infected can do treatment at 2nd trimester only,if rct is difficult in 2nd trimester and to avoid tooth removal best option is to drill and open the teeth under antibiotic coverage and place some relief medicament and postpone all treatment after delivery

    Hasini,

By cleaning if you mean, proffessional ( by a Dentist ).. then yes. It is safe during your second trimester. You will be in the best of your health during this time, so it gets a lott easier.

    Ooviya,

The gums go through bouts of hormonal effects too in pregnancy ! :bonkIf it gets too worse, you need to visit a Dentist and ward any small swelling / tartar which could cause bacteria etc.

Meanwhile, you could do warm salt water gargling. But, just that wouldnt help much. Visit your Dentist.
