My brother is having his first kid and its a baby girl:cheers. I appreciate if you could give me any suggestions on what can be gifted to the baby and also any thing that you feel to be gifted to the parents i.e my brother and SIL.

As far as my parents and his inlaws are concerned am sure they are all geared up to buy the regular gold jewellery like chain, rings, bangles , silver anklets etc...so I am searching for new ideas on what to gift.,,I did tell my brother that he can pick a crib and I would pay for it...but again I am thinking am I supposed to give anything else?? please suggest!

As far as my brother and SIL are concerned they are not that much into gift giving I mean for weddings/birthdays/our kids etc....He is there when we need help but they are not that much into the art of gift giving so I was wondering, do I have to stress myself so much:bonkwe have gifted him pretty hefty amount for his wedding but as we gave it in the form of money, we didnt feel that we did the right thing by giving in the form of money:hide:so I need some creative ideas/suggestions.

    Thank you all...

gifting gold is a good idea as per me, because most of the people expect it.
And as u said its a baby girl, giving something like aravanki would be very nice.

gold jewellery can be kept for life long.
Where as crib, she mite hardly use for 3 years and after that its give to some one or pushed to storage.

    good luck.

Thank you for the suggestion dear!! But I am not really looking at gifting any gold as I want them to decide on what they want to buy / plan for their kid..as vanki or any other items other than the chains/rings is their personal choice (some would love these traditional items..some may not..so dont want to take a chance on that:bonk) moreover as I said we have given him good amount for his wedding in the form of cash..so not really looking at gifting any big time gold items...I am still confused and wondering what might be good...Yes crib is just till 3 yrs but he is looking at a multipurpose crib which can be used till the kid is 6 yrs old..like a convertible crib to toddlers bed kind of one! thats why I opted for it and moreover we are going to have several occassions in future for this gift giving...so thats another thing that made me think over on what to gift:spin

    SriVidya,

Very thoughtful of you to gift your bro and SIL gifts for their baby. As a FTM here are somethings I may have found useful:

    1. My parents gifted us a crib- Graco lifetime crib and my sister picked up the bedding.
    2. My sister also bought a fischer price swing.
    3. When my cousin had a baby shower, I made a gift basket of useful stuff like long sleeved and cuffed onesies, caps, wash clothes, pants, body suits, sleep n play, caps, fleece blankets, diaper bag, bath towel, etc. This is most economical and useful for first time parents to bring their baby home.
    4. Travel system...

cheers and congrats to you too on becoming an aunt!:thumbsup

The best gift I ever got was a baby swing...which converted into a todler swing. It came with a bed and a chair which I could easily attach and place the baby in. And it was the best thing ever. I saved it for my second (3 years later) and it still worked beautifully.

The bed part was great for when they were still infants and not able to climb out of it. The chair part was also good in that I could use it as a carrier. They both got use out of it up until age 3 or so.

The swing we had was a GRACO...it was a teal and white in color. We still have it but now it lulls only thier dolls to sleep :)

Granted it was 12 years back but I have seen similar swings in stores. I'm sure the new ones are even better. Some even play soft music to lull the baby to sleep. Good luck on your search.
