    Hello ladies,
I just got my GC and my 2 year old DS is born in US and has an American passport. I am planning to go to India in March end. I do think my DS would need an Indian Visa. How do I get it? Do you have to go to the embassy in person or can you get it by mail? What is your experience? And what about GC holders? Do we need any type of visa to travel to India?
Any details the BTDT mommies can provide would be helpful. Once I have visa and tickets in order, I would come back and ask you about what to take to India with a 2 yr old..For now.. would really appreciate if you could answer my query on visa.
    Thanks,
    R

    Visa question: Answer.
Please go to the nearest Indian Embassy, apply for your son's POI OR Visa (I suggest POI card compared to Visa).
I am not sure which is the nearest Indian Embassy Office near to your location. You can check for their web site online for more details.
For example., the nearest Indian embassy for me is www.cgisf.org you can check this site for basic details of the POI card or Visa.

    Hi Delmommy,

First of all, if your son is a US citizen, born to Indian parents, he'll be eligible for a PIO card and its valid for 15 years. You may apply for his PIO card in the nearest indian mission; if you live in delaware, you need to apply at Washington DC indian embassy. Here is the link

Embassy of India - Washington DC

Else if you plan to apply for a visa, visas are not directly issued from Indian missions anymore. You need to apply through the outsourcing agency Travisa. Please refer the link..

    https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/homepage

Visas or PIOs, you may apply by mail - need not be in person. But make sure you give enough time for the processing and book your tickets accordingly.

And my dear, though you are a GC holder, you are still an Indian citizen. Then why will you need a visa to visit your mother country!!

    Happy Holidays!!

Sorry I had replied for US passport. Fixed my reply.

For Indian visa or PIO card you can apply by mail or in-person to the nearest Indian embassy. Though we are very near to SFO I had applied for my daughter by mail and got the PIO card within few weeks. As writeme mentioned, you make sure that you have enough time for getting PIO done before your travel. IMHO go for PIO than visa.

For GC, nothing is required from India as you are already an Indian passport holder.

    Hi Advitha,

Can you please clarify why we need to apply thru a passport acceptance agency for an Indian Visa or PIO card? The thread is about Indian visa for a US passport holder! Seems like there has been a miscommunication. To my knowledge, PIOs are to be applied at the indian mission and indian visas thru Travisa.

Thank you very much ladies.. I would apply for his PIO card. Since we dont have 45 days time (that's how long it takes to get it processed), I guess for this March's travel, I would get him a 6 month visa..
Thanks again. You ladies are the best !!
