Its time we got our degrees now. We are qualified to get it....

.It is not the regular MBBS. It is a three year course in medicine to handle patients in rural areas. The five year qualified docs do not want to go rural and yet they don't want quacks(????) or the three year degrees to become saviors of people in distress. The long que at hospitals. The running time between villages and 24/7 multispeciality hospitals, not to mention the huge bill and lodging for the person(?) staying with the patient. The anxiety another matter.

My paatti was one great medical adviser minus the degree...you think you can give her a degree posthumously...she must be delighted ya...sure enough her soul will bless with wonderful herbs for all...coming to the point. She used to visit the kapaleeswarar temple in the evening ….her `clinic' ...and people used to throng to see if they can get some relief for cough for the little one....swoon for the aged....tooth ache for uncle...so on and so forth...nobody thought she was a quack...she knew the inside out of body functions and what could heal a little discomfort in a jiffy.

Although they call it the alternative medicine, we find it difficult to adjust to the medicines or the strict regimens. For example practicing yoga and pranayama for years one can be free of almost all diseases at least the huge ones like cancer aids etc.

at home we learn to treat small discomforts with herbs, kashayams and perhaps a few exercises or breathing. This knowledge starts right from childhood when the herb or medicine is spelt out clearly like take tulsi crush it boil it in water strain and drink kind. Minus the fees but a sense of satisfaction that somebody got well... some people get really acquainted with such herbs kashayams and alternate methods that they rarely visit the allopath. The telephone rings non stop for consultations sometimes keeping them awake all night if a child in sick, either at home or at a neighbors.

What the villages want is preventive medicine...good water, sanitation and someone who knows how to handle emergencies and this often requires a good presence of mind rather than a degree...im not against degrees ….......and thats what we are giving them na....every one of us...like the first teacher at home for the kid....do we ever rush to the doc before we try out some kitchen medicines...unless the situation calls for emergency where we are not able to decide what to do or cannot decide as the health of a dear one is at stake??

considering the fact that we do the first round of health care....i think we should be given degrees too....?

it would be nice to see....Dr.sathya..na?

    hi sathya
good observation. They will be quacks still after 3yrs course but the only difference would be they wuld be called doctors.
The mdical course is so vast & increasing day by day that even after 5 yrs the MBBS doctor is still ignorant of many many things & reference to MD or MS is necessary .
This is true that alternative medicine is help ful up to certain level & for that one dont needs Drs but some elderly aunt or granny is good enough.
certainly the preventive aspect is more important.

    Hi Dr. Satya

Very true, all mothers should be treated as Primary Health Service Providers. And we do have a whole pharmacy of Jari bootis, kashayas, choorans at home thanks to our grandmothers.

But, seriously, I think it is a good idea to train people in Primary health care and Nursing, and send them to places where most needed. After all, villages do have Midwives and Vaids. Local traditional methods can be regulated and licensed so that spurious things are not given by quacks.
But I don't know about the shortened, 3 year course. It sounds something like saying thats enough for villages ! It seems unfair to people living in villages. After all they have same anatomy, same diseases as townsfolk.

    dear jaishree

    quacks is what they call
    an ayurvedic, herbalist
or one who learns it on his own...
a doctor is licensed to kill
    is what they generally say
and not being able to save the patient
    or give him proper treatment
    is everywhere

    what is important is
    preventive health care

    thanks for stepping in

    dear lakshmi
    and thanks for the degree....
    (Dr. sathya)
the three years course was there
    before
    and they were competent enough
    to give primary health care...

    about something less important
    for the villages.........
it is just that we consider ourselves
    indians..........a little ``mattam'''..low
    in our own eyes
    such that alternate medicine
that has answers to aids, cancer
    or h1n1...take a backseat
    and because of our sluggish/lazy
    outlook
    we consider the allopath high..

    Dear Satya,

in Jaipur too u have some old timer doctors, there is one Dr.Bhutani, huge line with him, je will charge u like 30/- for his own clinic medicines, like the olden times, and the token u have to take in like No. 300 or so.and so many swear by him.

And then u have these fancy hospitals. My friend went to one, a 5 star one, got his whole body test done, 3500 i think, and they went 4 of them.

Cholestrol was 250 and the doc advised a tablet, i think it was wrong.i had cholestrol of 500, where as it should be in the range of 125 to 175.Doc told me, just take a walk, cut down red meat, no medicine, and come and see me after a month.Dont get scared.

Did that, and it came down to 150 levels, no mdecines.

So i agree with u, that what we need are sensible doctors, or like yr relative, who treat coughs and colds and niggles with some home remedy.

    Well said Satya.

    Regards

    kamal

This day a comman man goes to a medical shop telling his prolem taking few pills and goes away. In olden days when a doc is on leave or absent at Panchayat hospital, the pharmasist/ compounder will sit in doctors chair and give medicines.
Doctors appointed at that time was only GCIM or Diploma in Medicine and surgery where he can stitch the wounds, dress the wounds, give first aids and prescribe the medicine for fever.

This day the docors charges are Rs50 per patient per consultation and these docs will inject something give a tab for all purposes and charge Rs100.

A poor man can not offer this.

Some docs who has a room prfer patient with Dicentry, loose motion and admit for two hrs for administer drps and charge a room rent of Rs350?+ saline water Charges with 50% increse and other accessaries which will be around Rs400 to Rs500.

So my suggession is that the government should teach the Medical course in local languages, give them scholarships and post them in Panchayath hospitals.

    Dear Sathya
    Long time no see!
Honestly, I would trust you a lot more than I would a highly qualified quack! The city docs buy equipments worth crores of rupees and recover double the cost of those equipments from the patients! Affluent patients love to go there more as a status symbol and when they discuss their ailments with the doctors, the doctors stand to learn more about the ailments from their patients. With the plethora of info available in the Internet on all conceivable ailments from Athelet's Foot to cerebral hemorrhage, it has now become a level playing ground for both the patients and the doctors. When the discussions reach a climax, it will be hard to make out who is the doctor and who is the patient.

The village doctors with a three year degree are likely to be a lot more respected in the villages than a FRCS in a metro. I have visited health camps organised by Rotary etc with a just passed medical graduate. The respect and the attention he receives in the village camps will be more than some legendary doctor may hope to receive in a city. The villagers don't care about the degrees. More often, it is their own faith in the doctor that cures them.

I have statistics to show that highly qualified city doctors kill more patients through their callousness than the devoted quacks of the villages. I read in the papers yesterday that a Doctor in Ahmedabad infused into a boy suffering from some blood disorder, blood infected with AIDS!

    Long live the village doctors!
God, give me this day my daily Lehiyam that'll cure me of all diseases!
    Sri
