"Age" is more of what you "feel" than the actual number of years you have walked in this planet, isn’t it? No, I am in no way trying to make myself appear young as each year advances but frankly many a time I do not feel my age at all. In fact, at times I have to forcibly remind myself to act and behave in a manner more appropriate of my chronological age than my mental age. This shuffling between my actual age and mental age has me quite confused at times.

Yes, I am in my chronological age when

I huff and puff after climbing ONE flight of stairs.
Some days all the parts of my body that are “working” ARE “hurting”.
I open the refrigerator and stare at it blankly, trying to remember what I needed in the first place.
I rush to Google to find an exotic name for my illness, when actually I am just lazier than usual.
I always talk FOR the MIL rather than the DIL during those spirited discussions which my young friends have.
I think I know ALL the answers but nobody asks me any questions. And if at all I am asked for advice from the “just married “or “new moms,” it is ONLY because they want to be polite. Of course, THEY know better.
I find myself supporting the naughty child rather than the disciplining parent.
My daughter indulgently and laughingly calls me ancient, weird or old fashioned.
I instinctively reach out for my daughter's hand while crossing the streets.
Vanity takes a second place to comfort and I go out with my spectacles rather than wear contact lenses.
Every year, my throat goes all tight and chokes up on seeing my parents come to pick me up at the airport and my first thought is that they look a little more tired and older than the last time.
I happily look forward to a "no activity planned" weekend.

I feel at least two decades younger when

I reminisce over our childhood with my brother on the phone
I go shopping with my daughter and SHE compliments me on my taste.
I take my parents out for a lunch or a movie, just "me" and them.
I watch any Srk/Hashmi movies with my daughter, just the two of us.
I giggle loudly with my old friends over completely inane things.
My young students treat me as their pal and relate the happenings in their class.
Every time I talk to my father and he asks me "eppadi irrukai kondhai"
I watch the sitcom "Friends" with my family for the umpteenth time and still :rotfl:rotfl
Every year, I tear up on leaving my parents and my family tries to make me feel better by saying I look like the red nosed reindeer.

And oh yes, I felt REALLY young when my youngest student asked me sweetly in all innocence “Can I add you as my friend in facebook?” “But you see me every day, what do you want me in facebook for” I asked him. “So that I can see your picture”, said the little one immediately. Well, now that made me feel beautiful and sought after too. Bless the little dear.

I have just concluded that I am as OLD as I feel. Why bother about Father Time?

    Mindi,
Thoroughly enjoyed your chronological age..and 2 decades younger version of yours:
Lucky you are to have your youngest student as a Facebook buddy..:thumbsup sure thinking of this incident would definitely make us feel younger than the actual one.

I want to add one more to the chronological one...nowadays, I just go out shopping with the dress I am on in the house, without even having a second thought of changing it..:biggrin2: and with the same 'original face' of the morning.

    Dear Mindi

:thumbsup Enjoyed reading it. I too find reminding myself of my chronological age at times. That realisation comes mostly when the bones and joints start to creak and protest. So sweet to know that you have a young student willing to add you on facebook. Well, you surely come across as a two decades younger person here on IL. So, you may need to add that point as well in the second category. Good going and how old one feels is very much how old one feels in his/her mind.

    dear srini,

thanks for stepping in.I am sure all of us go through this.I sometimes feel physical changes are easier to accept but mentally how to appear older (not that i want to ) i wonder at times.:) so i have given up,I am as old as i feel

hahah i can also relate to that...but srini that is only here..in india I am different..maybe because if I go out like that ppl will ask " are you not feeling well, what happened" here people are just not bothered so no extra efforts taken to LOOK "well":biglaugh

    Dear shree,

thanks for the visit .So, you do agree with me that the body ages with time but not necessarily the mind:)

    Dear buddy ( Mindi)
This is not fair dear. you have made me remember the thing which I want to forget or trying to forget!!!! Your post is so hilarious and true that I began to laugh with clapping my hands!!! Then my dear DH passed this remark " Enna chinnaponnaattam sirippu?" This remark made me to remember my chronological age. I just wanted to add some more things" when the moters of " grown up daughters " call me " Aunty":rant ( without calling me ' Akka)"
