Driving license

Me too planning to take NJ drivers license and on L2 visa.Recently opened a checking account with proof of my TIN,Indian passport and Indian drivers license.For drivers license the bank statement works as a address proof and there is 6point ID that has to be taken care of which includes proof of residence.

Did you move from any other US state to NJ? If so, you might have a letter from USPS with your change in address (provided you have subscribed for the 'mail redirect facility'). I used that as my proof of addr at MVC. Else you can add your name too to any of the utility bill like electricity, gas or cable. Bank statement also works!!

 

Try the MVC in Bayonne....make sure you have all the documents in place..don't forget to take the L1 documents..and if you have not changed your last name to that of your husband's, you need to show your marriage certificate as well...and you need a communication with your name on it..soft copies/printouts are not accepted..SSN is a must..be there as early as possible..they open at 8.00am and work on saturdays for half a day.

for proof of address you can do the following

1. subscribe some phone on your name with the address ( i did this, subscribed vonage in my name, with our address)

2. Include your name in lease

3. Include your name in PSEG bill

4. subsricbe cable/ineternet in your name.

SSN letter is must. For H4 we have to take denial letter from SSN office. For L2 (check whehter you are eligible for ssn number )

Make a join A/c in bank with your Husband. You will get debit card. (it is one of the 6 point ID)

Your Health Insurance card in your name . (it is also one of the 6 point id)


While going for written test, take all the papers, your husbands passport, your L2 papers, your Indian driving license, your passports.

Some MVCs demand they need to meet the primary visa holder in person before they issue you the Driving License if you are on dependant visa. Even if we take all the docs of the primary visa holder, they say its mandatory they (DMV) meet them (primary visa holder) in person!

Was wondering if anyone got an Indian driving license converted into a NJ License without having to do the road and knowledge test.

If you have done so 6 months back, it does not count as rules have changed. So do let me know if anyone one of you have got it converted in the very recent months.

I got my NJ Driving license with Indian License couple of months back in Lodi(NJ) with out road test.

Read the driver's license manual fully and take online practice test.

*Written (Knowledge) test is must.
*6 point ID is must.
*If you are on dependent visa, take primary visa holders documents.
*Its mandatory that they want to meet primary visa holder in person.

Thank you so much for the info.
But i did get my license doing the road and knowledge test.

in Edison they failed me in my road test so I was wondering if I could just convert my Indian license. But then that was not possible , so finally went to Rahway and passed my road test.

Rahway DMV are a much friendlier staff and environment and not as strict as Edison. I drove using both my feet(which is not allowed) but yet got my license with just a warning. this would not have been possible in edison.

Written test is compulsory. For 6 point ID:

I took my passport with I94, health insurance card, marriage certificate, house rental agreement (my name included) and indian driver's license. I also took SSN denial letter because I am on H4.

I gave the road test in Rahway and failed the first time. But today I passed.

Mostly Jersey city MVA is what Indians suggest to go for getting license without giving road test. But my experience is that your Indian driver's license should have the exact same name as what your passport is showing / what you will give here. Otherwise they will not accept and ask you to give the road test. This is what happened to me. So if your name is same on passport, indian driver's license and the name that you are planning to give here, then go to Jersey city MVA. Some say even Edison and Rahway accept that way. Good luck.
