Missed this thread somehow. Vidyaa.. great one ! very useful !

I was looking for some information on cooler bags. i dont pump at home to carry to work yet, though i can do it as my DS wouldn't nurse well in the mornings and i keep pumping out to maintain supply. if i plan to do it, and if the travel time is just about half hour, should i get cooler bags, or carry them as it is? more info on cooler bags pls.

    Asha,

Am soon joining work so I was also searching info in this.. My cousin asked me to buy medela cooler bag plus ice pack to store milk when commnunicating.. She asked em to put that ice pack in freezer at work always and then put it in bag along with milk and carry home..

anyways, other ladies also will help us.. :)

note- am plannign to buy Medela® Ice Pack for Breast Milk, BPA Free*-*buybuy BABY&

    http://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=15115106&
--> try to zoom this image and you will see a small bag with above ice pack.. buy bag & ice pack alone.. and not the pump since I feel its too costly.. I have medela swing with me.. it works well for me

not sure if we got this question of Poonam right.
My answer to this: i consider it sterile for about a day, though it should stay sterile longer too. to be on the safer side, as part of my morning kitchen chores, i sterilize the pump & storage bottle as well.

I got the Medela cool bag plus ice pack along with my Pump in style Advanced bagpack. I put the ice pack in the freezer at home the previous evening. In the morning, I carry the ice pack and the empty storage bottles in the cool bag. After the two pumping sessions during the day, I just put the milk bottle in the bag with the ice pack. I don't have a fridge at work yet. The milk stays cool till evening when I reach home. I put the milk in the fridge and the ice pack in the freezer.

    Hope this helps.

    Asha,

For storing milk while commuting all we need is a bag & ice pack. You can buy any type of bag & ice pack and can put bottles inside that.

1st link is an idea about ice pack.

Between, what pump do you use?

Sorry, i checked for replies only today. This is the guideline I use for my pumped milk, my baby have never had any problem since I have been pumping at work for almost 3 months now. Also I never had smell problem, may be because I am a vegetarian, also milk is different from person to person.

Also I guess not all nurses are well educated about breastfeeding and breast milk storage, and it is sorry to learn that in US some hospitals, nurses and docs have vested interest to promote formula feeding. If you have doubts raise it to your pediatrician, and/or lactation consultant or La Leche league members, to those who support breast feeding at any cost.

    kellymom.com :: Links: Breastmilk Storage & Handling

I use Lansinoh storage bags to freeze, and there are storage instructions are the same on the bag too.

Also I have read many books regarding the benefits of breastfeeding, and almost everyone agrees that even though 40% of antigens are killed in the freezer, it is still better than formula at any given time. Maybe I am biased, because I am a STRONG advocate of breastfeeding, I am determined to breastfeed my baby no matter how difficult it is ....

I am in US, for those who are in India I am not sure whether what I am doing is suitable, given that the temperature and cleanliness (at offices, common fridge) is quite different. Also make sure to check the temperature setting inside the office fridge, and if it is set to high, dont hesitate to make it lower ... I bet no one will even notice.
