    Yeah...it does!

I heard from my mom about a Telugu saying which goes like this.." aaru maasam sahavaasalu chesthe...vaaru veeru avataru..' (Telugu friends, please excuse my grammar)

Which means, if you are associated with a person for 6 months, you are sure to become him/her.

To be more clear, we copy their mannerisms, their ideas, etc., which are convenient and suitable to us..:coffee

Copying their nature..I think is not possible..as each and every one's nature is different and cannot be copied..:biggrin2:

I can give you all, an eg. from my experience itself.

One day, my daughter commented on my English, saying.."Amma, your english is not good these days..:bonk, whether it is in writing or speaking.
It was good at the time, when you came over from India..now, as you are used to the Tanglish words, (typing Tamil words in English, which makes it more reasonable not to look for the appropriate English words) it is becoming worser and worser.." :drowning

This set me thinking, maybe she is right..I am using these Tanglish words even in emails for more than 6 months!:hiya

Another example, is of the day-time nurse, who comes to look after my mil, to whom I had to speak in English, sometimes I find it hard to explain somethings to her and couldn't get the appropriate words, which I compensate with the 'sign language' of course.:idea
Nowadays, I see that she also finds it hard or get appropriate words to explain somethings to me...maybe it the result of dealing with our family, especially me for more than 6 months..:biglaughWhen I told her about this saying, she said..it might be..:spin and started laughing.

But to say the truth, association with IL for more than 2 years, (which is 4x6 months), made a lot of difference in me, except the improvement in English..hehe!

But what difference it made in you all in dealing with me..(just like the nurse):biglaugh

    Dear Bhargavi

Your English as far as I am concerned is good and you write so well. I am not so good in English and sometimes Ihave to refer to the dictionary for some words. Anyway being in IL I have also learnt some English. Just now I cant think of anything else will come back again if I remember.

    love

Srini.........very interesting to read this topic I say !!!

I will narrate one such experience of mine...I used to work with Citi Bank before (just for 10 months temp.) and that was my first job here...used to utter words/syllables just like how my boss lady used to...and I did not realise it until my DH said "aren't you talking just like her"? and anyways it took me sometime to get over copying her though it was unintentional...

Now ever since I started watching the tv programme "Maanaada Mayilaada" I feel that I use too much of Fantabulous, Superb in my conversation.

Definitely as your mom rightly said......6 months being with a person....changes our individuality quite a bit !!

    Dear Srini,
I am now recollecting some of my experiences to know how far the statement is correct:). Wow!!!! it is true. One day I was talking to my children , giving them some instructions. Suddenly my DS, remarked " Mom , you are talking in malayalam accent just like Dhanam aunty". She was my neighbour for one year. I caught hold of her accent very quickly. But Srini, I cannot learn hindi, eventhough I was therefor 6 months and talked with the maid in sign language.
I want you to clarify one doubt. When i am getting influenced by others accent or mannerism and viceversa, why my DH is not influenced by mine?:)
    with love

Sri, it is perfectly okay to kalandhufy Tamil and English words. when you are communicating with fellow tamils. Ad English is not a static language. It is spoken differently in different places. Like American English has words like vamoose (FROM sPANISH IMPERATIVE VAMOS, MEANING LET US GO ) AND aUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZELAND ENGLISH USES MANY ABORIGINE AND MAORI WORDS0 BUT WHAT MATTERS IS COMMUNICATION. USING WORDS OF TAMIL ORIGIN WITH YANKS WOULDNT MAKE SENSE UNLESS YOU USE THEM SO REGULARLY THAT THEY BECOME PART OF WEBSTER'S!

Fantabulous Sudha! Eventhough we don't get those channels, I got it from you..:)
Sometimes, as you had pointed out, it is unintentional..but we come to know only when somebody points it to us..
