You can actually breastfeed an adopted child..The other day I met a lactation consultant and she said there are certain medicines which can trigger milk production and they can be given to moms who adopt a child.
Actually my pediatrician adopted a baby and his wife breastfed the baby until the baby was a year old.
    So it's definitely doable..

Thankyou, adhusmom, saumya234 and mridusudha..........but i m not sure of a few things---
    1) is it possible in india???i mean r the medicines available in india???
    2) are these medicines safe for the baby????
    3) how successful is this???? i hav read that just by pumping also, milk can come even without giving birth to a baby......that seems highly unlikely to me!!!!!!
    4) is it acceptable by society????or mayb i shud not make it public............atleast in the US, it seems not only acceptable but encouraged...i am unsure about india.........
I m looking forward to ur guidance..........

Hi, at what stage of adoption are you... it is important to lactation protocol right before you get to bring the baby back home.

Adoption: Inducing Lactation So That Breastfeeding Is an Option | Parenting Squad

From what I understand, adoption lactation is possible when the child is newborn and has not lost the sucking reflex. I am not sure how it works when the child's already been nursing from a bottle for x number of months.
The galactagogues prescribed are usually safe for children, some of them are actually used to control reflux in children.
Look up BPNI website for information on doctors who are trained in breastfeeding in your city.

You are awesome for wanting to breastfeed your adopted child. If that ever becomes an issue you could use supplementary nursing systems

I hope sometime in the future - right now we are going through some health issues and the stress had been bad - we will adopt a child and breastfeed her. In my opinion, it is really between you, your partner (if you are not looking at single parenting adoption) and your baby how you feed her. I would do it in public as I did with my first child, I would draw the boundaries and tell them politely why their opinion is not important to me and that by breastfeeding I am providing nutritious and immune-building food to my child.
    Hugs and good luck.

    Thanks a ton "tikka".......
what a nice and encouraging reply!!!!!!!
it was really nice of you to send some links as they are really motivating............
as for the society..i m just not sure!!!! in fact i m even wary of discussing this wid my parents and in-laws!!!! though my hubby is very supportive mainly becoz he does not want me to miss out on any of the "motherhood experiences"!!!
we really dont know by when we will bring the baby home but most probably she wud have been bottle fed for some months...........so its going to be a tough task!!!
i m also in touch with a la leche league leader in mumbai who was also very encouraging..........
looking forward to more notes on this sensitive issue..........

Don't get sad if you can't breast feed the adopted baby, there are several mothers who don't produce breast milk after delivery.

I was thinking the same thing...my sister also could not breast-feed after 2 weeks.

You will enjoy the the baby's experience anyway dear. All the best to you.

I also have the same opinion..if you cannot BF the baby, dont feel bad about it..I am a BFing mom..but I would definitely say, by adopting a kid, you have gone far ahead of me! very few people can do it while giving birth is a very common thing..go ahead dear..its not just fulfilling your desires, more than that saving another child's life..not giving birth, but a rebirth! i am sure, you will experience the same amount of love and affection to your baby just like any mothers..If you can BF that baby, that is big bonus!! Good Luck dear..:thumbsup
