Savitha was cursing herself for hitting the 'snooze' button on the alarm that morning. As a result, she woke up very late and had a pile of work to complete. The most difficult of them was to wake up her only daughter Ranjani [about 3 years], bath and feed her and drop her to the play school cum creche on her way to office. Being a single parent is never easy and she realized it every moment.

She lost her mother long back and her father had been a great help all along. He was the pillar of support when she divorced, and had a special bond with Ranjani which she even envied at times. He had been away for a shortwhile to help one of their relatives who got operated recently and was expected to be back in a month. In fact, it was Savitha who forced him to go.

Just before he left, they put Ranjani in a play school, much against his liking. "C'mon Pappa! She will be 3 in 2 months and definitely need to attend a play school now!", she said. As he left, Ranjani felt a big void, which Savitha could not fill. Most of the days she would make a big fuss and refuse even to get up. Savitha somehow cajoled her and managed to go to work, though a bit later. That day, as she quickly finished her chores, she found Ranjani already up. Surprised, she gave her a quick hug and bathed her soon. Ranjani even ate the tiffin without fuss. Savitha switched on the TV and asked her to watch, while she hurried inside to eat her breakfast. When she came back in a few minutes, she was shocked to see that Ranjani was not there.

"Ranjani!", she shouted, but got no response. They lived in a small apartment in a big complex and she ran to the neighbours houses to check if Ranjani was there. She was not. Terrified, she sat heavily on a chair as precious minutes were lost. Then, she went to the terrace, hoping that she would be there [occasionally they went to the terrace on sunday evenings]. She was there, sitting quiet. Controlling her anger, Savitha went closer and said, "Ranjani! Whats this? Its already late for us and you are hiding here...". Before she could complete, Ranjani intervened and said, "Mom! Where is your handbag?", with a big smile on her lips.

In fact, she was sitting on top of it.

Very true Sreema. She wanted her mom to be with her always. To her little mind, her mom's handbag was the object that could lead for some extra time for her mom to spend with her. Thanks so much Sreema, for your continuous feedbacks. -rgs
