Chapter-38

Dev

Srikanth appeared tensed when he picked up from office on the way to his meeting with Mukund.

‘Priya is out of town. Vivaan’s grand mother expired it seems.’ He said.

‘Oh no…it’s really important you talk to your father. Whether you take his help or not keep him informed.’ I said and there was no reaction from his end. He parked his car at the coffee shop where he was supposed to meet Mukund. I haven’t interacted much with Mukund but had a good opinion about him based on what Srikanth used to talk about him.

Mukund was dressed in business casuals and sipping his coffee. There was an elegant air around him.

‘Hi Srikanth ..Dev right?’ he greeted both of us.

‘Yes sir…’

Waitress came with the menu and I ordered for both of us.

‘Srikanth..I want to know what happened today..’ Mukund asked seriously. When Srikanth finished narrating he remained silent.

‘I’m disappointed, Srikanth. Using meeting room for romantic purpose is that the professional behavior?’

‘I was just hug and kiss… leave it you won’t understand..’Srikanth said

‘You have a nerve to do a mistake and then justify it to me. All of us have opportunity to be emotionally carried away yet we remain in control.’ Mukund said.

He then logged to the office laptop and was searching something. His brow tightened as he lifted the phone.

‘Hello…why the hell there is no CCTV recording of meeting room 5A in the folder?’ Almost all heads in coffee shop turned towards us hearing his sharp voice. ‘I need an update in two minutes..’ he barked the instructions.

Mukund got a call sooner than we expected ‘You mean deleted…no backups is it? Right I want you to revoke all the access to Padmini. I’m sending a mail right away on that.’

‘Tough luck boys, Padmini deleted the CCTV recording of the room.’ Mukund said. ‘Any luck with tracing Harini? I know Priya wouldn’t be reachable now.’

‘I’m just wondering whether Harini is safe..if CCTV recording is deleted wouldn’t she try to make Harini non reachable to us.’ Srikanth asked.

‘Might be yes..but she would have to come for the enquiry tomorrow..wait let me clear that..’

He dialed Padmini’s number and put that on speaker.

‘Padmini..Mukund here. What is that harassment complaint regarding Harini?’ he asked.

‘Yes she has registered the complaint against Srikanth..you remember the guy who raised all hue and cry about Evolution idol. He misbehaved with her when she was alone in the meeting room and tried to tear her clothes it seems..poor girl..she is completely shaken.’

I could see Srikanth clenching his fists.

‘Is there a formal complaint from Harini? I have seen Harini with that boy often..’ Mukund commented

‘Yes there is an email complaint from her based on which I have setup the inquiry.I have forwarded you that as well.’ Padmini replied confidently.

‘Right I tried reaching Harini..she is out of reach. Do you know where she is?Is she okay?’ Mukund asked trying to fish out the details.

‘She is getting better..I have taken her with me for this Recruitment event so that she is out of the shock.’

‘Carry on..catch you later.’ Mukund ended the call.

‘You could have asked about the CCTV or asked her give the phone to Harini.’ Srikanth blurted.

‘Patience young man…that would give her a clue I’m suspecting her..’ He again checked the laptop.’Mail is from Harini’s personal email..could she have hacked?’Mukund wondered

‘Or just stolen the phone sent the mail and switched it off’ I said.

‘Could have..lots of possibilities. You were in the corridor Dev? Didn’t you hear nay noises?’ Mukund asked.

‘No I was away and Padmini was in the corridor..I knew what was happening in the room as it was in video conference…so..’ I stopped in mid-sentence ‘I was actually recording the conference so I must be having a copy of what happened in the room.’ I said cursing myself not to think about it earlier.

Srikanth’s face sparked up. ‘Can you confirm whether that exists? Anyway Srikanth if we are submitting this to inquiry there will be questions on your kissing episode.’ Mukund was saying.

Meanwhile I tried Rajib and asked him to check whether the recording exists. I had set it to be recorded for 2 hours and the meeting ended in an hour.

‘All that and some more. I could see Srikanth’s action, Padmini confronting Harini and escorting her out of the room. After few minutes I could see Padmini picking up a mobile and going out.’ Rajib said and I relayed this happily to Mukund.

‘That’s cool. Srikanth go back home, speak to your father he is American time zone if I’m right. I’ll call you tonight after viewing the recording on how to go about the inquiry.’ Mukund assured him. While Srikanth went home, I and Mukund went our way to office.

Mukund asked me to come to his cabin when I’m done with my work. Meanwhile Rajib had to leave early for his daughter’s birthday so it was mid night when I went to Mukund’s cabin.

‘I wondered whether you left for the day without meeting me..’ Mukund said as soon as he spotted me.

‘Not a chance when Srikanth’s career is in danger.’ I showed the recordings and he trimmed the contents and transferred it to his laptop.

‘Srikanth would face a warning and nothing else. Good..something concrete against Padmini…’ Mukund was telling me.

File transfer took time and I was feeling damn sleepy. Mukund saved the recording at multiple places. I wanted to ask him what would happen to Padmini, but kept quiet. Tomorrow Srikanth would tell everything happened in inquiry. I sent a text to Srikanth to call me tomorrow morning.

While I was in parking lot Mukund asked ‘ Want a lift Dev?’

‘No sir..My bike is there..’ I showed fighting to control a yawn.

‘You had a very long day. Go home and rest. Good night.’ He said.

I wondered how he appeared fresh despite pulling a long day and that too in that age.

Ramya called saying Vithuran has just gone to sleep and she is going to catch up sleep too.

‘He slept without hearing my lullaby.. I won’t sing for him from now.’ I chided. Little did I know I won’t sing for him, ever.
