This is not specific for rel-forum but the problem seems to happen the most here. Mods feel free to move it anywhere.

Just as we have a way to rate the advices can we have a way to rate the thread with more than a yellow star?Let me explain.

When a thread runs for 100 feedbacks a lot of insight is gained into the problem and the OP. Lets say an impasse is reached in a particular case. After a gap of few months when the pool of the active posters changes the same OP posts the same problem with a different title ...with the same result..a deadlock after few pages.Story repeats endlessly..and spans few months or even years.

Now posters who have been here long enough see a pattern. They see the futility of it all.How many times does the wheel have to be re-invented? And they are human ...they want to warn people that their energy is better spent in other threads where women really want help..where the time spent in analyzing a problem to come up with a solution actually has some meaning.

Does IL rel forum have a venue for that? Just as we have likes for the advice... can we have a way to rate the OPs thread? A way to actually prioritize the threads that will get looked into? A way to channelize the energy. A rating not based on the problem but how an OP actually handled them in the past.In the absence of such an avenue ..the frustration will continue to show up.

    Your thoughts?

    Justanothergirl,

I am glad you have opened this topic. I too have similar concerns. I dont mean to hijack your thread but
I also have some concerns in addition to what you have detailed. If you dont mind, i would like to offer them up here so we can discuss them also.

What should we do when a poster starts a campaign of retaliation against other posters by making outrageous statements, harassing them, picking apart every word, provoking them, and going to other forums to incite others to gang up on a particular poster and asking them to post against that person on her thread? I have a problem with this type of behaviour.

IL policy as far as I understand is a take it or leave it policy. Anyone can post, anyone can comment, everyone is supposed to take it or leave it. This is the reason for its popularity and rightly so. This situation though, this type of behaviour kind of falls between the cracks, imo. I dont think IL forums have a mechanism in place to prohibit such behaviour. If there is, I would be interested to hear it.

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

Mmm...we have the option of not responding to a poster if we find it repetitive don't we? It is one thing to post our opinion and another to tell others what to do.

Besides troubles in people's life have peaks and valleys. When the stress level goes up they post here. The rest of us have a choice in when and how we respond.

Maybe we need concrete guidelines for all of us. Then there will be less confusion in how we interpret them.

As for the other post, I personally thought Shanthi did a great job in restricting the flow and Tugga accepted it with grace.

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

JAG, thats what the mods are for. Thats their job. When some thread is going in a different direction, they jump in to have a word, and Satchi has been good at that! But otherwise, I think, its better to stay away from such posters if its not going the way it should.

That said, I would like to emphasize another point here, since this is brought up. There are a certain things to keep in mind. Human beings are not products off the shelf - that they cannot be categorized. So a whole lot of generalizations made here about men/DIL/SIL/MIL are mere prejudice. So when a poster comes in to post saying "oh my MIL is bad", a few posts following it, which says, "oh all MILs are like that", just adds more fuel to the fire, IMO. So if we could all reply leaving aside our own personal prejudices, IL will be a much better community!

PS: My suggestion might not be exactly relevant to whatever JAG started this thread for. Nevertheless, wanted to post my suggestion as a means to improve IL!

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

'Yes I completely agree. Those who have been around the forum a bit long realize that ..How will new posters know that the same issue has been discussed to death and the OP is not looking for solutions but venting .That becomes evident only after a critical mass is reached .If the same conclusion is reached each time let people be given a heads up..
I dont say we should stop people from responding....I want a system to rate.

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

SSC The issue is not about moderation.Moderation comes in when people go tangential, lack decorum, use abusive terms etc...I want a system which channelizes the energy constructively.
People who post and time they can spend are both limited and I want a system that respects that.
If an OP has been constantly creating threads which drain energy and lead nowhere then as an active member who actually cares about what I type and people for whom its intended I would like to be warned by people who have been here a lot longer than I have been ..."Hold off JAG...we have been through this ..before..It aint going anywhere..."
Do we have something in place for that?
You have certainly broadened the scope of my thread and that's fine. I completely agree.

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

JAG, I understand what you are saying. And do agree with you that a 'warning' flag may be good. But going through the posts, and setting out such features is not part of web development. Its not an operating system deadlock or a programming impasse. Its something a 'person' has to do, manually (or develop a neural machine to understand each poster's style of posts and classify them). IL is a free community. So does IL have the funds to pay a person to take care of setting up such flags, I doubt that. If thats added as a more 'active part' of moderation, well thats the best you could ask for. But more moderation than what we have already, takes away the freedom of posters hugely!

Phew, those are all the ideas I could come up with :-D

PS : Well, there are certain things in life that can be learnt ONLY through experience. And by letting a poster be independent is IL's way of telling us to invest our time wisely. Bah, enough thought for the day!

    Thanks, JAG. :)

Teacher, thanks for letting me know. It was past my bedtime when those corrective steps were taken and I was unaware of what had transpired until you mentioned it.

Re: When a poster turns into a troll?

SSC, the posters in the forum themselves can flag the post. We already have an alert button, right? Right now it goes to the mod. If that can be slightly altered so a flag shows on the forum at the same time? That shd do it. I guess this would be the equivalent of a dislike button, really speaking. There wouldn't be an extra load on mods. Of course if someone is misusing the button, mods can step in.
