hi all, thanks a lot for the details. As i guessed it is called thattaipayiru or kaaramani in tamil. One gud recipe is "thattaipayiru suraikai kuzhambhu". If intd try that. Recipe: boil black eyed pea (1 whistle after soaking full nite). After boiling strain the water (do not use it) Take a kadai. Add boiled peas, chilli powder(sambar powder), tomato, onion, few pieces of bottle guard(suraikai) or brinjal, tamarind water, salt, turmeric and let it boil. When almost done add very little coconut paste. (No need to saute any of the veggie's, nor onion and tomatoes, add it raw) Finally season with mustard seeds, urad.dhal, little asafoetida powder and 1/4 tsp of methi seeds
