Without getting into the debate of right n wrong, It is a common trend to wish people through these texts, whatsapp, FBs here these days. Almost all wishes n greetings happens like that. So it may not be about being national or international. It may just be about the comfort of msging n avoids loadsa extra talks n not bother about time difference. Almost all my relatives, cousins, friends across india n abroad do this now.

This is a genelized question, whether we live out of state or country, even another area in the same city, this question always arises. It's more like an automated question like asking how r u.

Curiousity or some one they know might be trying out for something similar.

Again, it is similar to 'when visiting again', when a common event is happening, it becomes a common topic for everyone to talk about. In reality, they may actually not even care about your attendance or checking your response. In these cases, we mostly stick to 'we would love to attend n will surely try to make it' with everyone else n will give our yes or no only to the people who invited us. You don't need to answer everyone.

Regarding these topics, in reality they may not have anything else to talk about to you. They may not really care about the answers, it may just be about making conversations on the phone n not have awkward pauses. If their questions bother you, you ask the questions.

Blame the forefathers n mothers who started the whole showing off business, that made everyone believe that people abroad are lucky, hep, rich n cool. Though people have started to understand the ground reality now, but it still has a long way to go for everyone to change that old mentality.
