    What is common for Neha[15],Lavanya[30] ,Geetha [50] Sarathy[55]]and Dr.Shrikant [75]

    THEY ARE BORED

Neha is[ 15] is in the nineth grade in a topnotch school in Bangalore. The best of coaching, the best of food and the best of cultural activities are at her disposal in the school. She is a good badminton player and represents her school in a particular age group. She learns classical music once a week. She learns classical dance again once a week and any dance program in her school includes her.An hours badminton coaching is a part of her regular activity. She has her own smart phone, laptop and music system.Yet she is bored. How are you Neha? Brings the unexpected reply-so boring.

Lavanya[30] is highly qualified-CWA,ACS,ADIT[International taxation]English proficiency diploma included. She handles back office taxation filing for a APAC country in a fortune 500 company. She is highly regarded ,gets award s one after other and earns 1.5 million rupees per annum. When you ask her she says life is boring-doing the same thing again and again.Everything is bound by systems and procedures and there is no scope for creativity.Even the awards at unfailing regularity do not excite her

Geetha [50],a mother of two children gets up at 5.30 am,successfully serves breakfast and packs lunch for her husband and children by 8.30 AM. Maids come in quick succession to wash vessels, sweeping and mopping, loading washing machine and laying the clothes for drying and dusting. Some one comes in the evening for making chappathis and subji. Geetha watches TV for some time aimlessly alternates between Face book,Twitter and whatsup .She takes a book to read which leads to a power nap.Her voice sounds bored and yawning, she speaks with her close friend on sweet nothings .She comes to life only when her children come back from school.Obviously she is bored during the most productive part of the day.

Sarathy [55] is working in Administration in a PSU.His job is to assist his boss in maintaining discipline and also initiate disciplinary proceedings against erring staff.Nobody helps him as none is trained in handling personnel matters. He is a self taught man wading through books and manuals ,having started his career as a steno. When there is trouble his seniors consult him for handling a delinquent employee. Many cases fail as judiciary tends to give benefit of doubt to employees and Sarathy is relieved but agonises over the solitary effort he has to put in to present a good case.He has reached the end of career advancement and he is at Executive Menopause stage. He is thoroughly disgusted with his official life and is waiting for the pay commission report to seek early retirement.

Dr.Shrikant [75] is a retired Professor of Pathology and stopped practice when he was 65.With well placed children and adoring circle of friends he had a roaring time in Hubli until tragedy struck. He lost his wife due to lung infection when he was 72.He now shuttles between his children in Bangalore and London. He feels that he has lost his freedom. His attempt to practise failed as he has not kept in touch with developments in the medical field for 7 years. He is a terribly bored man unable to spend his time and lack of mental activity has led to dementia and sometimes vertigo.

Hope I have presented convincing cases to prove the pervasiveness of boredom in different age groups. I shall now try to analyse the causes for this malady but not in the order of priority or importance.

Technology is the main culprit. Our threshold level of patience has gone down with technology speeding up completion of jobs. One service engineer told me that my laptop is slow and he offered to upgrade.I said no, as slow speed helped me to spend some more time with the laptop.

We are becoming restless and when we have nothing to do we aimlessly reach for the phone and shift from one social media to another even though we might have done this only a few minutes earlier.

Monotony engulfs you waiting for checking in at the airport, collecting baggage and waiting for your turn to get into the car.Waiting at traffic signals and crawling through the traffic snarl add to our boredom.

Repetitive jobs with predictable outcome result in lack of interest in the details of the task and the required concentration.Lack of novelty kills creativity particularly those who love out of the box solutions.Teenagers are bored with restrictions on every thing they do leaving a frustrated feeling that they have no say in what they do.

Lack of meaningful interaction between family members and spending quality time is the villain of the piece.

Finally many are not clear what they want out of life.

While shedding boredom is completely in the hands of the individuals certain actions/activities have been found to be successful.

Cooking was an art during my mothers time.During our time cooking alternated between necessity and art.Today cooking is considered a dispensable necessity.Cooking for four people is over in an hour and fifteen minutes[my personal experience]In the earlier days of joint family there was always something or other to do.Many enterprising women have now turned into homechefs and offer exotic items-in the process satisfy their creativity and become economically free.Excellent receipes and videos are available to guide us.[I am a fan of Madam yogambal Sundar-puduyugam rusikkalam Vanga]

For teen agers give them a goal post and time frame instead of micro management.Go all out to support them atleast in one activity which interests them and in which they show promise. Let them spend some time with their friends, however keeping an eye on the profile of their friends.

Music with ear phones plugged in certainly help get over the boredom while waiting and watching movies, you tube on your Ipad is a big help while travelling be it train, car or aircraft. Solving puzzles,Sudoku etc wii keep you concentrated..

Group activities like senior citizen club or lalitha sahasranamam group keep seniors active.I find that 5.30 to 7 pm is the most boring period.

Playing a game of scrabbles or cards with family members brings about happiness and bonding.Raise a small balcony garden and each flower or vegetable will lift your spirits up.Watching a TV program together is also a big help.

From personal experience company of books is the best resource for completely eliminating boredom.Book lovers will swear by this formula.

Meditation and yoga when practised regularly help restore inner peace to deal with boredom.Let us try whatever possible and root out boredom which they say is the root of all evil-alcoholism,gambling,drug addiction etc to name a few.At 83 I am not bored and therefore why should youngsters get bored?

You are 100% correct. My father born 1889 very often said, relaxation and recreation is nothing but change of job.Even a small child who has just learnt to talk says'bore adikkarathu".When this boredom crossses a limit it results in tension. My son doing LKG told the teacher he had tension without knowing what the word means.
We don't know how to do the job without incurring boredom. My Amma ,a mother of6 daughters ,struggling in a joint family life ,very often discussed about this issue at her old age.Her oft quoted words' Hitham arinthu velai seithaal viral madakka saavakaasam irukkaathu"(If you know to do jobs learning the right prespectives ,you will have no time even to fold your fingers.)So, no boredom will result.

    I agree sir.
A very insightful and eye-opening article.

@jayasala42 ma'am's mother said it well
Being a science grad from India when I went for further studies in the USA, one semester one elective subject was accounting. I was lamenting on how boring it was when my husband told me "nothing is boring in this world. Life is beautiful and everything, be it science, art, history, geography, ... has something to enrich your knowledge.

Learn to do things with the satisfaction of having done a good job and nothing more, you will not be bored. Even enjoy doing nothing; you will not be bored. It all depends on your approach" He did say much more than this.

He just put Jayasala ma'am's mother's outlook in a different way

That helped me. From then on I am never bored. There is so much satisfaction and gratitude to be gained from everyday routine also.

Your mom was absolutely right. We were ten and there was never a dull moment.I remember my mom making kozhakattai during Vinayaga Chaturthy.Handling the mavu to make cups for accomodating the poornam was a work of art-transparent that it melted in your mouth along with the poornam Today wooden blocks are used to make an apology of Kozhakattai. I am not suggesting that one should work in the kitchen all the time but do what you can perfectly without distraction from telephone and calling bell. All appalams, vadams and pickles were made for an year.Work was evenly divided among the chidren which kept them busy. Those days will never come again and we are destined to be bored.SLN

    Dear kkrish,
Every thing you see has something to offer if we only care to look for it. For me Entomology was a boring subject until I decided that it was an engaging biography of insects.Once it was clear, today every mark, decolouration and withering leaves tell me a story and I manually eliminate them in my balcony garden and it has become an interesting question of matching my wits against their instinct for survival.

An idle mind is devil’s workshop...after my 12 th standard board exams, there were two months vacations till starting of graduation ...I was just eating, sleeping, watching tv, movies, I was not in touch with friends of college days as they all went to different places...except for a visit from my cousins, I was bored.. very bored...I could have done some course or exercise regime or some volunteer year work but I dint...Due to this idleness, I used to snack often, dint exercise properly, had over eaten and gained so much weight!
Also due to loneliness I had lot of negative thoughts regarding myself ,past and future etc...
    This affected my health...
After college started, graduation was so hectic, and so challenging...I was so busy..thus not having time to over eat due to hectic schedule my body slimmed down a bit...I could achieve target weight...also negative thoughts vanished as I and no time to brood over anything...
If I had a good friends circle and good relations with family circle I would have been happier...
That’s why I always feel that being bored and not connected with people is dangerous for health and well being...

    Dear SLN sir,
My idea of boredom looks a little bit different. In course of time we need to do some duties or chores though we are not interested. And some we do with enthusiasm. We never feel bored when we like what we are doing. Have to do things....we have to create interest in those chores. I do not enjoy cooking a lot.....then I put on music while cooking. Then monotony takes a back seat. Everyone has to find their own ways .

Boredom is our own creation. I worked in Marketing and there never was a boring time, challenging yes. Barring some routine jobs like working in an assembly line( and that too can be made interesting by talking to the person on your left and right), most jobs offer opportunities for creativity. That possibly is the reason, stenographers rose to become the CEO of the company by learning from what he or she was taking note and typing. Most turn machines.
I think if we work with a fixed schedule from morning to bed time, there will be no time for getting bored. The schedule includes waking up at a fixed time, going for a walk, yoga and physical exercises, breakfast, news papers, lunch, siesta, coffee with a book, evening stroll, internet surfing, dinner, TV news/whatsapp chat, facebook, writing some piece for a group or facebook. There is no time for boredom. None of these are must if some other important work or meeting needs attention.
There is however a condition. Do what we do with a smile.

When you are bored there is a tendency to overeat particularly sweets and chocolates. Once you have a target energy gets diverted bringing a work life balance. These are days of nuclear families and even in such cases every one pursues his interest and there is hardly any quality time spent among them.

    Dear Syamala,
Your reply itself suggests a possible solution. What we like we do with interest. Therefore look at areas for widening your interest. There is a lady who does not enjoy cooking but she makes it bearable by variety and not repeating any item during the week..I find my maid listening to video music while washing vessels and she is cheerful inspite of working in six houses.Every one has his own ways as you rightly said.
