Many women have excessive menstrual bleeding during their menstrual cycle. Sometimes the bleeding may follow an irregular pattern. Do not take this kind of excessive and heavy flow lightly. There is nothing wrong in paying a visit to your gynecologist. Because it may be due to uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are known to be the most common benign tumor of the women’s uterus. It has prevalence rate of 10 to 20 percent around the globe.

These are the tumor of smooth muscles and may be present singly or in clusters. They are generally present on the wall of uterus. These may be discovered in regular pelvic examinations also.
    Symptoms of uterine fibroids are
The patient may have excessive uterine bleeding which is also called as menorrhagia. There may heavy irregular vaginal bleeding with blood clots. Sometimes if the size of tumor becomes very large then there may be urgency to urinate .as tumor is exerting undue pressure on uterus. if it exerts pressure on rectum also then there may be constipation and you might feel heaviness in your pelvic area. If the size of tumor becomes very large then it may bring about changes in outward appearance of the lady. we can observe a increase in size around the waist and change in abdominal contour will be very evident. Sometimes these tumors may cause infertility and inability to conceive.
Diagnosis is confirmed by the ultrasonography, endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy.
The traditional treatment procedures are abdominal myomectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, hysteroscopy myomectomy. Now here I want to mention a new technique which is gaining popularity nowadays i.e. MRI guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) takes 2 to 3 hours and all the fibroids can be treated without any pain during or after the procedure. The patient can go home same day and she can resume her work from the very next day. There will be decrease in size and symptoms of the tumor. It has low risk of complications and hence a simple, safe and effective treatment for the uterine fibroids .so before undergoing any procedure it is always better to discuss about this new therapy with your surgeon.

Thanks .The exact etiology is not known. Some women are prone to having fibroids due to the following reasons: 1. Between ages 30-40 women are prone of having it.
    2. Overweight.
    3. African-American women are more prone that white women.
    4. Those women who don’t have any children nor had last children at a young age.
    5. Had a family history of fibroids.

    6. those women in middle age who suffer from high blood pressure or have frequent uterine infections are also more susceptible.
