Dear mommy's, my younger son is two years old. His intake quantity has not increased after his first birthday. His weight gain in also not very great. He looks little lean. For breakfast, he takes only two small idlies, or half dosa or one half bread slice. After an hour, he will drink 150 ml milk. For lunch, 3/4 hand cooked rice, with shall and veggies Evening. One cup milk. Dinner Same as in of/lunch. Or only one banana and 150ml milk. Is this sufficient for a two year old boy? How to increase his eating quantity?
I noticed "younger".... What is your experience with the older one ? Where is your child in the local developmental scale ? Doctors would usually weigh the child and let you know how he is with respect to the local norms. If he is doing OK on that scale, don't fret too much. Eating should be more frequent for a child. Have oatmeal cookies that he can eat at 2 hour intervals. Quite often a child would only eat half of that, and the rest will go to a housepet or a random crow outside. That is OK. We often say that a child's performance should not be compared with others; but, when they are little, it is just the thing to settle the mind of a mum, and give peace. Eating- play - developmental behaviors - sleeping and pooping are things to keep a close watch on. You said he drank milk (twice), does he drink juices, water or other things ? I used to gauge inputs and outputs with the first one (this was a long time ago) and do a mass balance, and expect the child to gain weight faster than he did. Does he have a specific sippy cup to drink out of ? having fun eating/drinking habits would get him to want to do more of that. Make eating fun; and he'll enjoy it.
I think food is fine try including boiled eggs, cheese, muffin, fruits, bread jam, for snacks. Try sattu mavu or ragi malt type drink if you feel low weight. Include curd paneer boiled eggs cooked dal for protein. My son is 3.5yrs Wakeup. glass of milk Breakfast. 3-4 idli or 1 dosa Snack cookies or muffins Lunch. Rice sambar veggies Evening. Glass of Milk sometimes boiled eggs or cheese if dint eat lunch properly Dinner 2 small chapati in milk or Rice sambar n lil curd rice or 1 egg dosa 1/2 Apple or 1/2 Banana morning or evening snack.
Kids this age are very fussy... That's the fact.. Google weight gain foods for toddlers and include those food items .. Add ghee to food... Do de worming regularly under doctor supervision ... And give the child proper exercise to feel hungry.. Ask doc to prescribe some multivitamin in case of deficiency.. Many things are beyond the control of parents..as appetite , eating habit and growth pattern of each child is different. As long as the child is active doctors aren't concerned if the child is lean...( as long as he is not grossly underweight ).
Thanks for replying amulet. I don't remember how much my elder one ate as mil took care of feeding him from his first birthday. Also i was not well then due to miscarriages and second pregnancy, so really have no idea about his eating habit until he started school and my second one was six month old. I have not checked his weight after coming to uk. Here, we had been to clinic twice, but the doctor never checked his weight. My mil keeps asking why second sons is getting leaner. Even my parents are asking the same when we chat to them. I am little worried whether I am feeding him correctly or missing something. Doctors say everything is normal as long as the he is active. yes, i feed him in special cup and sipper. Inbetween meals I give him small snacks. Mil says two year old will have four medium idlys, cupfull rice, or two dosas, but my son is eating only half of it. Is that right? ght.
Thank you sumalynux for detailed menu. I have not started chapathi. poori he will eat half or one in the morning or one bread slice. Is it ok to give cheese?
Thanks for the reply Needtobestrong. The doctors told me the same thing, not to worry about his weight as long as he is active. It is my mil, who constantly asks me to take him doctor.
Oh yes..previous generation people think something is wrong with the kid if he or she is not chubby,.while it's good to have concern towards the child, too much nagging is irritating.. Take your MIL also to doctor next time...she may understand if doctor directly tells her..
